Vicki Wallien Obituary

SAN ANGELO Vicki Lavon Wallien, 69, of San Angelo, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, in a local hospital. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Jim Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Vicki was born on Feb. 14, 1943, at Dale Mabry Air Base Area Command, Station Hospital, in Tallahassee, Fla., to Idohla Marie (Bell) Hoover and Howard Orville Hoover. Her father's grandparents settled in and were farmers in Indiana. These great-grandparents were Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants (German ancestry from Pennsylvania). Mother's grandparents were immigrants from Germany and Scotland. All had farms and were also butchers by trade. Vicki's family sold her mother's farm and home place in Indiana and moved to California in 1952, where she attended grammar school and high school. She graduated from California State University at Los Angeles with a bachelor of arts in elementary education. In December 1980, Vicki graduated with honors from Eastern New Mexico University with a masters of education and later earned 14 post graduate hours in early childhood and reading. She married Gary Wallien on Jan. 28, 1964. This marriage was for 38 years and ended on March 14, 2002, on the event of Gary's death. Vicki and Gary had two sons, Eric and Andrew; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Erica and Gary. Vicki is survived by sons Eric and three grandchildren, Andrew, Erica and Gary; and a great-grandson, Preston; Andrew; a brother, Tony and his wife, Jill; and a niece, Angela, in Omaha. Vicki taught in public schools for 29 years, 18-1/2 years in San Angelo and at Blackshear for kindergarten for two years; and 13-1/2 years in first grade at Bradford Elementary. She also taught kindergarten for six years in Bovina, Texas, and three years in first grade in Clovis, N.M. Vicki retired from public school in December 2009. She loved children and worked with them a great deal of her life. During the first retirement year, she volunteered at Shannon Medical Center and the Adult Literacy Council which she truly enjoyed. Due to her husband's work and other moves, she called seven different states "home" but truly enjoyed Texas the best. Contributions can be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church; the Adult Literacy Council; or the American Cancer Society for research as she developed a rare form of cancer which was very aggressive and not detected on an exam. Vicki was a true leader by walking in the Christian faith and doing God's and Jesus's work. She was one of the few people who I really admired in how she led her earthly life and contributed so much goodness to the lives of others. Her passing in not so much as our loss but heavens gain.

Vicki was a special friend and special teacher who I worked with at Bradford Elementary. When Day Elementary was closed and I came to first grade at Bradford, Vicki welcomed me and made me feel at home. I feel sure she would say that I helped her with many little things in our years together but she helped me more with her grace and dignity and friendship. I will miss her. She loved teaching school. I love the picture above because many students and teachers will remember that red polka dotted dress and pearls she loved to wear. She was a wonderful teacher to so many students through the years who will remember her as a person who cared for students and the learning and goals she tried to instill in all of them. These last few years she was a fighter for the disease of cancer. She did her best with a positive outlook. I know she loved her family and was very proud of them. We teachers heard many stories about you when she returned from her summer and Christmas adventures up north in Minnesota. She loved your visits too and the times you stayed in the summer. My heart goes out to you at this time with many prayers to help you through this time. I know she is enjoying being with Gary again who she missed so much. I am going to add a photo I had of Vicki and Rebecca Nash taken in 2005 at a Halloween Carnival at Bradford.

I am so sad to hear of Vicki's passing. I remember the days of teaching with her at Bradford. She was a good friend to me and my husband and I enjoyed time spent with Vicki and Gary. I hope that God comforts her family and I rest well with the knowledge that she is with her Lord.

Creating good relationships with teachers has always been a priority of my family. Vicki was the first relationship we had. Vicki was both of my children's 1st grade teacher at Bradford Elementary. Both are in college now with one graduating Saturday(12/15). He will be honoring you walking down that aisle to accept his college diploma because you were the one that got him started in school. We continued to keep in contact with Vicki over the years and she was an amazing lady as well as a teacher. I truly believe she was a "first -class" teacher at the top of her profession that made such an impact on the students of Bradford Elementary while she was there. She had a remarkable love for the kids and parents and always was honest and encouraging. We consider ourselves very honored to have known her and especially grateful to her for inspiring our children to work hard, make good grades and believing in their goals. Thank you Vicki! Our utmost condolences to the family. She was certainly a remarkable woman and a top notch teacher. We will always be grateful and hold her in our fondest memories of touching our lives.

Such a wonderful lady. I enjoyed her so much this past year in Vacation Bible School at church. Sure will miss her sitting in the middle section, but rejoice that she is in heaven with Jesus.
