WALKER WHITE Obituary
MASON - Walker White was born in Mason, Texas, on Sept. 6, 1905, and he passed away at his home in Kerrville, Texas, on Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at the age of 97. He graduated from Chapel Hill, N.C., High School and the University of Texas. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Men's Social Fraternity and the University of Texas Cowboys. He married Sarah Virginia White on April 16, 1929, in Clarksdale, Miss. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence McGaha. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died March 23, 2000; his parents, Mr. And Mrs. J.W. White; and five sisters and brothers. Virginia and Walker had two daughters, Jane White Hadley and husband, Tom, and Nancy White Neely; seven grandchildren, Ann Freiberger of Puyallup, Wash., and husband, Brian, Lee Walston of Mertzon, Texas, and wife, Danita, Walker Walston of Roswell, N.M., Roy Walston of Ozona, Texas, and wife, Serena, Walter Pfluger and wife, Sheryl, of San Angelo, Texas, Bob Pfluger of San Angelo, Texas, and wife, Katrina, and Audry Williams and husband, Steve, of Dallas, Texas. Walker and Virginia retired in 1997 after 51 years of raising registered and commercial Beefmasters Cattle on Mill Creek Ranch near Mason, Texas. He was elected a director of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association in March of 1936 and became an honorary director in June of 1983. He was elevated to honorary vice president in March of 1997. His father, J.W. White Sr., was a pioneer cattleman from Gonzales County who settled in Mason County in 1888 to ranch in association with his Uncle George W. Littlefield of Austin, Texas. He was a longtime member of TSCRA. Walker's mother, Cora Jane Bridges White, moved to Mason County in 1870. Members of her family constructed many buildings still in use today. Her family came to Mason from Dayton, Ohio. White has served as chairman of the Board and president of the Mason National Bank, president of the Mason Fair Association, president of the Beefmaster Breeders United and director of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raiser's Association. He was the organizer and owner of the Mason Warehouse Association until his retirement. He was inducted into the Beefmaster Breeders United Hall of Fame in 1987 for outstanding contribution to the Beefmaster Breed. In 1992, he was presented the first Live Oak County Beefmaster Breeders Legend Award. He is survived by his daughters and grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Mason Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Mason. Burial will follow in the Gooch Cemetery.
