WILLIAM DAVID "DUB" SLAUGHTER Jr. obituary, San Angelo, TX

WILLIAM SLAUGHTER Obituary

SAN ANGELO - It was with heavy heart that we bid farewell to William David Slaughter Jr., who went to be with the Lord on Dec. 28, 2006. Dub, as all of his family, many friends and acquaintances knew him, was a man who loved to be in the presence of any conversation. He was at ease surrounded by all walks of life; he spent countless hours trying to improve upon the many endeavors that he was involved in. He became a very well respected man by holding true to his convictions, and by his influence on the many boards and associations that he was affiliated with, not limited to but including the Iraan-Sheffield ISD School Board for 15 years, the Pecos County Livestock Association, the Ozona Wool and Mohair Association, the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, the Pecos County Appraisal District and the newly created Pecos County Water District. Dub graduated from Iraan High School in 1976 and graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in finance and a degree in ranch management in 1981. After graduation, he left Fort Worth and moved back to Sheffield to begin his career in ranching. Dub was born on June 12, 1958, in Las Cruces, N.M., to David and Barbara Slaughter. Dub is survived by his wife and best friend, Susan Mertz Slaughter, whom he married on July 23, 1982; their two sons, Will M. and Len M. of Sheffield; parents David and Barbara Slaughter of Sheffield; and brother Mark of La Porte, Texas. Dub is also survived by three of Susan's brothers, Len Mertz and Mort Mertz of San Angelo, and Michael Mertz of Eldorado; his sisters-in-law, Susan and Trina; and numerous nieces and nephews, and way too many friends to count. Pallbearers will be Dub's five nephews, Phillip, Lawson, James, and Louis Mertz, and Hollen Slaughter. Dub was a devoted husband, son, father and friend who will be greatly missed. Graveside service was Saturday, Dec. 30, in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the Slaughter family has requested that memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Words cannot express my feeling of emptiness, when I was given this news. Dub was a truly giving, loving man in many ways especially to me and my family. My heart goes out to Susan, Will, and Len. Words cannot explain, or comprehend your loss, Our healing is in the belief that thru our relationship with Our Heavenly Father, one day we will all walk with Dub again. Gods Blessings Love, Sonia

Susan and boys, Barbara and David--WOW, what an emptiness in my heart I feel about Dub. I so loved to see him ANYWHERE because he ALWAYS had a smile--even when we'd meet in our vehicles on the road--there was Dub's smile. I so love you all, and I so ache with you all in your loss. Please know that I am praying for you all often, and I hope that you will call me if you feel the need to share, cry, or just visit. Much love and understanding, Pat Gunn

Dub was one of my best friends. Of course you could'nt be around Dub five minutes without feeling like you had known him for ever. He always gave me the devil about being a democrat. The 29 years that I have spent in Sheffield were made a lot better because of the Slaughter family. Judy, Dana, Justin and I will miss him a lot.

These few words are for the family of Dub Slaughter, to a very fine gentleman that I was very fortunate to know in this life time. There are few people that come alomg in life that make a deep impact on your own and Dub was that type of man to me. He means a lot to our family for the things that he stood for as a respectable citizen and well a refined person. He will be missed by us all. May the good lord bless you and all your family.

Susan and Family, It is with a heavy heart that I type this note. We cannot ask why certain things in life happen. We can only look to our Lord and ask for the strength to sustain ourselves and family. Susan, may God bless each of you during this time of sorrow. Please know that you and the boys will be in our prayers. David, Carrie, Michael, Matthew, and Joseph Hill - Lubbock, TX
