David (Dave) Dempsey passed away May 2, survived by his four children: DJ, Matthew, Jack, and Kaitlynne, and grandson Walker, as well as Stephanie and Zach – whom he gained as children through marriage.
Dave lived the majority of his life in Grand Haven, graduating in 1971 from Grand Haven High School. He was the first individual to win a wrestling match for the varsity program in 1969, and has spent many years within the athletic community; helping with setup, running clocks for wrestling events, leading the chain-gang for football, and so much more.
Not only did he dedicate his time, but he was eager to help raise funds or items for people in need within the community. It became a point of pride that he was able to regularly donate to food pantries, as well as the school systems, as well as inviting, anyone he could, over to pick through his bomb-shelter-quality of reserves. Dave was a collector; of what? Anything and everything that he found unique. It was his love to share his findings with anyone who might give him the time.
It is impossible to encapsulate who Dave was in words, but if there was ever an attempt, it might go like this: Dave always stayed true to who he was; unapologetically himself. He provided support from the background, never seeking recognition for anything he ever provided. He put priority on his children – first and foremost – and then extended whatever was left to the community. He lived a simple life, and was happy with that; always passionate, never regretting or desiring for more than what he had. Dave will be missed, as his legacy echoes in those that were fortunate enough to meet him, and to know the larger-than-life individual that he was.
There will be a celebration of life on May 21, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Mulligan's Hollow.

I was a wrestler for Spring Lake High School. The Bucs were our cross river rivals. Dave was a class act. Even when things got "heated" Dave had a smile on his face....much like Coach Root. Had to respect that. R.I.P. , Sir!

Dave was the most genuine friend one could have. Every time I had the pleasure of seeing him I would take as much time as he would give to me- listening intently to all of his wonderful stories and sharing laughs and a few gripes too. Dave made me feel like a part of the club. He was tough as nails, funny, caring, honest, just all around GOOD. They don't make 'em like Dave anymore! I will miss him and I wish he knew how much I truly adored him.
Love and prayers to the family during this difficult time.

As a high school classmate of Dave´s I was so saddened to read of his passing. Our paths crossed a lot over the years and Dave always had that infectious smile and energy. He was always modest and caring. He was a great wrestler too, a state champion as a 10th grader if I remember correctly.
My condolences to his family and all who loved Dave

I was so sad to read about Dave's passing! I had many good times with Dave while doing the "chain gang" at the Buc Football games. He was a very dedicated person to the GH Athletic Program. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to the family.

I knew Dave starting back in the 80´s. As of late I would run into him at the WESCO in S.L.
Dave´s obit is written as well as anyone´s I have ever read. It fits him to a Tee so to speak.
RIP my friend. Perhaps we will meet one day at the WESCO in the sky.
