John Michael Schultz, age 63, of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on October 12, 1960, in Grand Haven, Michigan, to Albert and Margaret (Kresnak) Schultz.
After graduating from Grand Haven High School, John worked as a mechanic at the family owned "Downtown Automotive" alongside two of his brothers for over 40 years. Together, they were known as the "Schultz Brothers." John was hardworking and loved working on cars. He was often found at lunch with his friends and brothers or shooting the breeze with customers at the shop. He enjoyed being a father and grandfather, especially around the holidays, and loved roasting smores and playing family games. He was appreciated and trusted by many customers. John's favorite hobby was his red Jimmy, which he enjoyed racing at the sand drags in Silver Lake, as well as climbing the dunes.
John is loved and remembered by his two daughters, Stephanie Schultz (husband, Mehdi Imougay) and Christina Schultz (husband, Jeremy Scharphorn); son, James Schultz; four grandchildren: Kadyn Schultz, Ethan and Emerson Helsel, and Aya Imougay; five sisters: Virginia Machin, Edna (George) Frederick, Loretta (Mike) Larner, Jane (DeWayne) Juhnke and Mary Schultz; three brothers: Bill Schultz, Jerome (Beverly) Schultz and Mike (Michelle) Schultz; as well as many nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Schultz; and sister-in-law, Mary Schultz.

I too grew up in the peach plains area. I can remember as a youngster going over to John and Mike's house on Comstock and watching them wrench on motors. Two great guys, they were both very talented with mechanics. Will sure miss John. Certainly a tragic ending to a great life. RIP!

I am a retired teacher and believe in relationships and trust.
I have found it is better to really know who it is you are working with, regardless of who is working for who. This is true whether it is your physician, your boss, your mechanics , family, students, clients, accountants, attorneys, etc.
John and Mike are the best kind of people to deal with. They are super knowledgeable, smart and fun to be around if you are waiting for your car or to find out
Your next move. These guys will drive your car, listen for a noise, go out of their way, offer advice. They did this for all of their clients. Now it all falls on Mike. John has gone to heaven to be with Jesus. I will miss the conversations with John. I admire the friendship they enjoyed and benefited from the team they were. I will always bring my vehicles to Downtown auto, I will still hear the classic rock, I will still learn more from Mike, but it won´t be the same without John.
My deepest sympathies to your families. John will be greatly missed. John was a man of integrity and a man that seeks truth.

I interacted with John in his professional capacity over the last 24 years. He was always courteous, sacrificially made time (even when in the midst of a project) to listen, make an assessment, give sound advice, or just put your mind at ease. He always made sure you were taken care of and with his crisp communication you clearly knew what the commitment and expectation was. I enjoyed his dry sarcastic humor when that shone through. The love for his siblings and his children was visible in word and/or deed. John was the salt of the earth - an upstanding man and friend, that exemplified integrity - you could count on him and the kind of man you wanted to go to war with you. John I will miss you tremendously. Memories to be treasured forever is advice learned from you, your example of conduct, taking pride in what you did & how you left a mark on many of your customers lives. Thank you.
