Henriette Boundy Obituary

Boundy, Henriette (Hetty) E. 1/24/1929 - 4/16/2015 Henriette "Hetty" E. Boundy of Woodinville, WA, long time resident of Holland and Alto, MI, died on Thursday April 16, 2015 following a brief illness. Hetty was born on January 24, 1929 in Chicago to Henry and Elizabeth (Besse) Fikse. Born to a tenant farmer's family, her childhood was defined by the Great Depression and the annual growing season. Her family moved nearly every year after the fall harvest, often to communities of fellow Dutch immigrants in the Midwest (Grand Rapids, MI; Sheldon, Hull and Sioux Center, IA), or to towns in California or Washington state. Hetty's life was defined by the extraordinary levels of commitment she brought to every task she undertook. As a child, dinnertime debates between her parents and uncles (including Lou and Will Verduin) about predestination versus free will led her to be a theologically curious student of the Christian faith. She was an attentive and resourceful mother. Every other summer, she took her five children on summer-long cross-country road trips through national parks, mountains, forests and seashores to visit relatives in western Washington. Hetty had an unwavering faith in God. She was an active and dedicated church and choir member. For over 50 years, first in Washington then in Michigan, she was heavily involved in Young Life, a non-denominational Christian ministry that reaches out to adolescents. She is particularly remembered for sewing dozens of Narnia-themed costumes for fundraising banquets. She was married for 38 years to Bruce Boundy. Hetty is survived by her son David Boundy, Boston, MA; daughter Susan Boundy-Sanders, Woodinville, WA; son Mark Boundy, Phoenix, AZ; son Peter Boundy, Mesa, AZ; daughter Kyria Boundy-Mills, Davis, CA; and six grandchildren. All five children attended Hope College. She is preceded in death by parents, sister Geraldine Anderson, brother Cornelius Fikse, sister Ellen Fleming, and brother Tyman Fikse. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 25 at Kenmore Community Church in Kenmore, Washington. Memorial donations may be made to Young Life.
