Henry Zylema

Zylema, Henry Age 89, of Brandon, SD (formerly of Grand Rapids, MI) went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Henry was preceded in death by his wife Madelyn, son Randy, grand-daughter Jana Schaap, and sister Minnie DeLeeuw. Henry is survived by daughters Pat & Dave Ellens and Barb & Lyle Schaap. Surviving also are grandchildren Ben & Ashley Ellens, Jon & Laura Ellens, Sarah Ellens, Nathan Schaap, Katelyn Schaap and Lindsey Schaap; brother-in-law Dave (& Isabelle) Bylsma; special nieces Karen Barnes and Phyllis Taylor; special nephew Dirk Bloemendaal; and other nieces and nephews. Henry was born in Grand Rapids to Peter & Jessie Zylema. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High school where he took classes in printing. Henry served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he worked as a printer in the ship's print shop. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Henry was co-owner of Serfling Printing Company in Grand Rapids for 42 years until he retired. Henry and his wife Madelyn lived in the Grand Rapids area until 2012, when they moved to Bethany Home in Brandon, SD to be near one of their daughters. Funeral services including committal will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 1:00 pm at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel with Dr. Raymond Blacketer officiating, Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel Friday from 7:00 to 9:00pm, and prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Muscular Dystrophy Association, the American Diabetes Association, or the charity of one's choice.
