Dear Helen, Mark, and Keith,
I only found out today, the day of the funeral. Very sorry to hear! Of course you know I've known Ray since I was a pre-schooler, and have known all of you since the mid-60s. He was a very talented and personable guy. I feel he enriched the lives of both my parents as well. His loss will definitely be felt by many.
My condolences to you!

To the Ray Gill family,
We send our sincere condolences on the passing of Ray. He was our colleague and friend at GRCC.
He also had a tremendous influence on our son, Joe, He taught him how to play the clarinet, and also instilled a lifetime love of many other musical instruments. Joe now is a musician/actor in NY and soon will be in a major musical performance. It all began with Ray.
We will always hold him dear.

My condolences to the Gill family and to all Ray's friends who will miss him. I was at Union Jr. High when Ray first came here to teach. I spent five years with him and learned a lot. Later in life I was fortunate enough to get to work with him occasionally in local groups and his small groups. I will always be thankful for those lessons I learned. I'll always remember Ray for knowing more about reeds than anyone I ever saw. He had more "tricks" for salvaging reeds than anyone could have imagined. May he rest in peace.

Dear Helen and Family: I had the honor of singing with Ray and serving on the West Mich Jazz Society Board with him. He was well-respected by all of us - and I'll never forget the story of how he got Benny Goodman's clarinet bell. Love and peace to you all. My life is enriched by his.

Dear Mrs. Gill and Family, I had Ray as a private teacher during my Grandville High School years and shortly thereafter. He was an exceptional musician and extraordinary teacher. His gifts to the Grand Rapids community will always be a rich part of our local musical heritage and he will be greatly missed. Heaven's Jazz Ensemble just got better with his presence. May God richly bless you in your time of sorrow as you celebrate Ray's legacy, gifts, and his life.

I remember Mr. Gill from Burton Junior High School. I will never forget the day he came in to my Home Room class to inform us that President Kennedy had been shot. That was an historic day. Rest in peace, Mr. Gill.

Dear Mrs. Gill and Family,
So sorry for your loss. Your husband/dad had such an impact on my life as I was the guitarist in the Junior College Jazz Band and Jazz Combo. I can clearly hear him telling me, "when you finally get it tuned, please weld it." He brought out the passion I had inside me for music, but more importantly he taught me life lessons; to work hard, enjoy life and treat others with respect & dignity. I am blessed to have been mentored by him & I am so fortunate to have spent some time with him at Kent Community a short time ago.
