Barbara Ann (Hron) Rassmussen
1938-2023
Barbara Ann (Hron) Rassmussen, age 84, formerly of Grand Rapids, MN, died Monday, September 11, 2023, at Essentia Health – St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, MN.
Barbara was born in 1938 to Thomas and Doris Hron in Torrey Township in Cass County, MN. She attended Dorholt Elementary near Schoolcraft State Park, graduating from Deer River High School. Barbara married Robert Laney in 1956 and together they had one daughter, Lisa Ann. After Bob's death in 1962, she attended ICC for one year earning a medical secretary degree. Barbara worked for the Grand Rapids Public Library for many years. In 1965, she married Darrell Rassmussen, and they had two sons, Christopher John and Bradley James. They resided in Grand Rapids where they raised their family.
Barbara had several hobbies, including watching football, flower gardening (although she is remembered for having huge tomato plants), reading, sewing, and cross-stitching. She loved cooking for family gatherings where she is noted for having the best potato salad.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Robert and Darrell; infant son, Jeffrey; brother, David Hron, Sr.; and granddaughter, Angel.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Niehoff of Grand Rapids; sons, Christopher Rassmusssen of Grand Rapids, Bradley (Kristen) Rassmussen of Buffalo, MN; sisters, Karen Sinkola of Deer River, Carol (Greg) Cartie of Grand Rapids; brothers, Thomas (Sharon) Hron of Las Vegas, NV, William Hron of Cohasset; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, September 22, 2023, at 10:00am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, MN followed by the 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Blake Rozier will officiate. Burial will be at Wildwood Cemetery, Cohasset, MN.
