Charles Durwood Troy, 88, of Great Falls, an Army veteran, died of natural causes Tuesday in Spokane.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 5 pm. today at O'Connor Funeral Home. The vigil service is 7 this evening at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Funeral Liturgy is 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Survivors include daughters Harriet Ann (Lee) Dunbar of Bothell, Wash., Frances Elizabeth (Bryan) Rudy of Spokane, Wash., and Mary Patricia (Russ) Wirsching of Cody, Wyo.; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Marie Wirsching of Cody, Wyo., and Josef Adrian Dunbar and Katrina Ilene Dunbar of Bothell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Anna (Kohout) Troy, on Feb. 18, 2007.
Charlie was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Baraboo, Wis., to John and Mary Troy. When he was young, he and his mother moved around quite a bit, living in a number of cities such as Juneau, Alaska; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco, Calif.; and Emmett, Idaho. Charlie graduated from high school in Emmett, where he received his nickname, "Bounce," for his exploits on the football field. The team was undefeated his senior year. After graduation, Charlie briefly attended Gonzaga University in Spokane before being drafted in the Army in World War II.
Charlie spent a number of years working for the Ayrshire Dairy before taking a job with the Great Northern Railroad as a freight caller. Charlie met his future wife, Alice, through a Catholic singles group. They discovered that they had a mutual love of the outdoors and married soon after that on Sept. 27, 1958.
Charlie loved his family, his horses and his guns (especially Smith & Wesson double-action revolvers). He was an avid gun collector, skilled marksman and hunter. He held the quick-draw world record of 1/100 of a second with the double action S&W .44 mag. He loved pack trips and hunting trips in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, camping, hiking and football.
The family would like to thank the staff of Riverview Terrace and Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, especially Donna Madej, palliative care musician.
Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, c/o Music Thanatology, PO Box 2555, Spokane, WA 99220. For more information, call 509-474-4917.

Hi Harriet, Elizabeth and Patricia. I was saddened to learn of your dad's death. I've been out of town for the week and will leave again tomorrow am. Our family shared many good times with your folks and your grandmother Mary. I appreciated their friendship during our first years of marriage in Great Falls. You all were definitely darlings and loved so much by your dad. We are remembering you in our prayers. Florence and George Anderson
