John Halseth Obituary

Dr. John R. "Jack" Halseth, 87, of Great Falls, a World War II veteran and local physician who specialized in sports medicine died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Jan. 16 at Highgate Senior Living in Billings
His funeral is 11 a.m. Feb. 5 at Faith Lutheran Church, with burial in Highland Cemetery. Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his children, Pamela Cole of Whitefish, Thor (Karla) Halseth of Agoura, Calif., and Eric (Vicki) Halseth of Billings; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Hall) Halseth.
Jack was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Great Falls to parents Hans and Verna Halseth. He grew up in Great Falls, working on the railroad during summer vacations and school breaks. He played football at Great Falls High School, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Barbara Hall, who was a cheerleader. Jack attended the College of Great Falls, where he began his premedical school studies until World War II interfered. He was soon in the U.S. infantry as a combat medic. While carrying the wounded off the battlefield, his group was hit by a mortar shell, and, tragically, all of his comrades were killed. Still, he continued to serve as a medic with a group called Roger's Rangers, whose mission was to go behind enemy lines. With a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal for his efforts, Jack returned home to marry Barbara and to continue with his premed studies at the University of Montana.
He and Barbara moved to Wisconsin so John could attend Marquette School of Medicine. Upon graduation, they moved on to Saint Luke's Hospital in Denver, where he finished his residency, specializing in pediatrics. In 1955, he and Barbara, along with their three children, returned to Great Falls to begin his practice with the Great Falls Clinic. During that time, he volunteered as a team physician for numerous high school athletic events. He also acted as medical adviser for local and professional rodeo, and for amateur and professional boxing in Montana. He served as the athletic commissioner for the state of Montana, as well as being a participating member of the Great Falls school board. He was instrumental in the implementation of the special education program in the Great Falls school system.
In the early 1980s, Jack partnered with Dr. John Curtis to proudly open the first sports medicine clinic in Montana. It was solely dedicated to the training and treatment of athletes, some of whom went on to compete in the Olympics. He retired after 40 years of service. He was president of the Montana Medical Association, and represented Montana physicians as a national delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA). He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1972. He was especially grateful for the opportunity to participate as an associate professor to the University of Washington in the origination of the WAMI program, enabling many Montana students to attend medical school. A great joy in his life was riding in the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive of '89. He and Barbara enjoyed a lifelong membership to Faith Lutheran Church.
Jack also was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Bergan (Bob).
Dad, we will forever cherish the many memories of camping on the Smith River and sailing on Flathead Lake with your sardine sandwiches. You shaped our lives with your strength, loyalty, integrity and dedication to serving others; you are our hero. Doctor by trade, fisherman by heart, cowboy to the core, our dad forever. We love you.
A spirited Norwegian has gone home to sail the seas of heaven.

Pam, Thor and Eric: it is with the most sincere sympathy that I express my sorrow for the loss of your father and my friend. Jack was one of the first physicians I became acquainted with when I first came on board as the Executive Vice President of the Montana Medical Association in 1970. He was a pillar of the physician community, very well respected and could always be relied upon to assist in the Association's efforts of promoting the art and science of medicine and protecting the health of Montana's citizens; you could not find a more dedicated physician. Jack and Barb exceptionally represented Montana's physicians in their participation with the activities of the American Medical Association where he was the Delegate from Montana. As president of the MMA he fostered the Association's aims of continued quality patient care. Jack and Barb were always fun to be with and will truly be missed. Brian Zins, Helena.

To the Halseth family; This is no secret to anyone that your father was a magnificent man! I don't recall seeing another dr until he retired from the great falls clinic. My mother Annah worked with him at the clinic for years. When we atarted he was redheaded and a red mustache and when we left he was grayheaded and red mustache by the time he left the sports medicine his mustache caught up.... He often told me that your parents hair grows gray and falls out from their children so what should we expect from him he had to deal with ALL of the SICK kids and thats what happened to his hair. My entire family will miss this dear man and friend to my mom ! Sincere sympathy Annah Anderson and Ronda Eustance

Dear Pam, Thor and Eric. Since I read of your Dad's passing a week or so ago he has been on my mind. He was a longtime, cherished friend dating back to high school. Although a couple of years ahead of me, I recall his personality and his athleticism as an all state football player--a guard I believe-- and his girl friend Barbara, the prettiest girl in school.
Years later we became colleagues and friends in the GF Clinic. He and his partners were docs for our three boys Tom still recalls his humor and kidding, and how relaxing it was for little kids.
I joined the faculty at the U of WA after 8 years in the Clinic. One of my most valued jobs was helping to start WAMI which included helping to set up the pioneer Pediatric Clinical Unit with Jack and his partners--very sucessul then and now 40 years later. Students loved Jack and John Curtis and their time with them in GF.
Jack is gone, but we know where he is. Sometime we will be with him again when he will be his old self as we remember him so well.
With sympathy on your loss of your great Dad,
Bob Davidson, MD; Bellevue WA

Our sincere condolences to the Halseth family. In all the years we owned the Clinic Pharmacy, Dr. Halseth was a favorite of mine, always a sincere but witty man, proud of his Norwegian heritage. I often repeat to friends his definition of how Ludefisk is made! His ritual of hoisting the Norwegian flag at the Clinic to commemorate Norway's independance day was an annual ritual. In having lunch breaks in the Doctor's lounge at the Clinic, the conversations were always spirited with Dr. Halseth in the room. A wonderful man, we have lost another of the best generation, and a healer to many.

To the Halseth family,
I want you to know that I thought Dr. Halseth was a great man....
I learned a lot from this distinguished gentleman and I think he was a top pediatrician. I truly believe that Dr. Halseth died of a broken heart when his lovely wife passed.
My prayers are with you and remember that you will see your loved one in Heaven again......

To my dear friends Thor & Eric and sister Pam, I am very sad for your loss and mine as well. Your dad was not only a father to you but a second father to me as well as many other people from Great Falls. He always had time to give guidance and encouragement to all who needed it. His passing is our loss for a time but heavens gain. Be comforted in knowing we will all be together again in due time. I love you all.

Dr. Halseth was a great doctor! He was the only doctor I had while growing up in Great Falls, during the 60's & 70's. He helped me in so many ways.
I can remember back around 1970, I had been found to have lost some of my hearing in my right ear. It was a challenge for me to understand clearly the speech of others. One day, after an appointment with him, he put his arm around my shoulder and gave me some advice. He told me about how he had lost some of his hearing while fighting in the war. It was a struggle for him, too. Yet he was able to cope by learning how to read people's lips. Then he gave me a demonstration. Through the years, that has been so valuable to me! I will be forever thankful to him for that advice.
Around 1987, my husband and I had moved back to Great Falls, after having lived away for several years. By this time, I was grown and Dr. Halseth was involved in 'Sports Medicine,' over pediatrics. I came down with Chicken Pox and was very, very sick. Since I had not yet been able to find a new physician, my mother called Dr. Halseth to ask him for advice. He easily remembered me and was so good to offer up advice. His instructions helped pull me through!
I was sad to hear that Dr. Halseth suffered from Alzheimers disease, during the latter part of his life. He had a brilliant mind and was a gentle, kind man. I will forever remember him as one of my most favorite doctors, very personable and caring. So sorry to his family for such a great loss.

My deepest sympathy to the Halseth family! Dr. Halseth was one of a kind. I was lucky (and spoiled) to have him as my doctor the first 18 years of my life. He has set the standard for other doctors since and no one has even come close to measuring up to his standard of care! I remember once I missed the last few steps when going to the basement. I was unable to walk. My mom took me to Dr. Halseth. He carried me around the clinic, making me laugh all the way. After he read my x-ray and declared that I was fine, I “miraculously regained my ability to walk. Dr. Halseth was there for me after going to the emergency room on a Sunday night in anaphylactic shock. I remember him at my bedside checking my vital signs and reassuring me that everything was OK. I know the Halseth family knows how blessed they were to be able to call Dr. Halseth “Dad. Countless Great Fall children were blessed to call him their Doctor as well!

I met Dr. Halseth when he was a member of the Montana Board of Physical Therapy. Sports medicine was his love and he wanted all areas of the medical field to be aware of the impact that sports could have on our young people.

My Heart felt condolances to the Halseth Family. Dr. Halseth Treated my brother and myself after we were both bitten by a dog over 35 years ago in Great Falls. Dr. Halseth acted with professionalism in every task he undertook and the Fisher family appreciates the many years of service he provided to our family.
