John Miller Obituary

SPOKANE - Longtime Great Falls resident John Henry Miller, 80, of Spokane, who opened the first McDonald's franchise restaurant in Great Falls, died of complications from respiratory disease Wednesday at his home.
A celebration of his life is 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Spokane Cremation and Burial, 2832 N. Ruby, Spokane.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marvlyn "Sandy" Miller of Spokane; three daughters, Pam Stevenson of Ventura, Calif., and Janie Seim and Lou Ann Himel, both of Spokane; a sister, Kay Johnson, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
John died at his home in Spokane on Dec. 31, 2008, embraced in the loving care of his family, following a long and courageous battle with a respiratory disease. He was born Sept. 20, 1928, to Ray and Mary Miller, on a primitive homestead in the prairie country north of Douglas, Wyo.
In 2003, after retiring from operating McDonald's hamburger restaurants in Great Falls and Missoula, Mont., John and Sandy moved to Spokane in order to be closer to family. However, no matter how strong John's family bonds might have been, his pioneer heritage and cowboy lifestyle, characteristic of Montana, never released their hold on him. He appreciated all that Spokane had to offer, and cherished the relationship with his family, but his heart remained in the rustic mountains, rivers and prairies of Montana. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and game tracking in Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and, of course, in his beloved Montana. We shared that with him, and all of our family remembers the best times of his life were spent with family at our rustic cabin in the Rockies, at Placid Lake in Montana.
John opened the first McDonald's restaurant in Great Falls, in 1969, and another in Missoula in 1972. This was a pioneering adventure because he was one of the original franchise owners in Montana, and, although hard to believe now, few had heard of such a thing as McDonald's.
Prior to 1969, he worked in the aeronautics industry, performing applications engineering, introducing advanced turbine engines into first-time flight operations in airplanes. This fueled his passion and curiosity for flying.
From a kid raised on a homestead on the prairie, John's accomplishments stand as a monument. They reflect his tremendous energy, creativity and inspired wisdom. We, his family, appreciate that, but, most of all, we will deeply miss and forever cherish our beloved husband, father, grandfather and wonderful friend. He lived and loved well.
John's family expresses their deepest gratitude to his devoted caregivers, Dianna Bieber and Cliff LaRue.
The family also wishes to thank the staff at Hospice of Spokane for their wonderful and unstinting support. Contributions to them in lieu of flowers would be most appreciated. These should be directed to Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210.

Dear Sandy & family: We will always cherish the days of knowing you and John while we lived on Adobe, and especially remember John's kindness in looking after my parents, Arnold and Grace, when they lived there too. John was the ultimate neighbor, always caring about others, watching over all of us, truly the one person you could always count on. Linda has never forgotten his black bean & corn salsa, and still has his recipe. The world would be a better place with men like John, and the testaments in this guest book prove the point. We do trust, though, that strength in faith and family will help you all through John's passing. Sandy, we especially wish you well.

It was after we opened Lily's Oriental Emporium when I met John. We became friends and I recall many a day in his basement home office on Adobe helping him get conversant with the Internet. It was a pleasure just being in his cheerful company and my the entertaining stories he could tell about crashing airplanes, appropriating steak to grind up for hamburgers and Nuns in Habit promoting their latest aspirant for a job in his McDonalds. On one of our buying trips to the Orient we even sourced product for one of his promotions asking us to just call him John Five Percent. Thanks John for the guidance you provided us in our business ventures while sitting around your kitchen table with coffee and cookies just baked by Sandy. You are very fondly remembered and thanks for hooking me up with your cousin Ray!

I was so sad to learn of John's passing. I worked at McDonalds in Great Falls in the 70's. I learned a lot from John and the entire Miller family. Those lessons still serve me well today. He was larger than life and a blessing to so many. My heart goes out to all of you at this sad time. May John rest in peace and may your memories sustain you.

Dear Sandy, Pam, Janie & LouAnn,

All of the Miller family in Colorado is saddened to learn of John's passing. You were a lifesaver to Jane and I while I was stationed at Malmstrom in Great Falls, Mt. John was kind enough to hire Jane and at the time that was the only work available to a military spouse. We will never forget the fun times, the hunting trips that John and I went on and the big trout that LouAnn caught on the Missouri River at the ranch in Cascade. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please contact when you can.

My folks have so missed you both since you moved to Spokane, Marvlyn. And we've missed seeing you during our Great Falls visits in recent years. Your grandson, Jon, misses you so much. You were the saving grace in his life, and he admired nobody more than his grandfather. My sincere condolences to Grandma Miller. Sixty-two years of marriage is remarkable and admirable. Your husband was a wonderful man. Thank you, to both of you, for remaining steadfast pillars of love and strength in Jon's life.

Pam & Janie,
You may remenber me, I worked for you @ McDonalds in GF in the late 70's. If you recall, I had a bit of a legal problem at the time, to put it mildly.Friends were in short supply at the time, but you & John stepped up, befriended me, gave me much needed support & employment. I hope I conveyed to you at the time my appreciation, but if not, here it is. Many years have passed under the bridge since then, & after I returned to Mt in the late 80's I had lost contact w/ you. I bought 2 businesses in East Glacier, where I had spent my childhood, & winter in GF, during the off-season. I was saddened to read of your loss yesterday. He was a good guy & I'm sure a wonderful father, helping you with many life lessons, which is about the best gift a parent can b estow. I'm glad I knew him, & you girls as well. I have fond memories of all of you. THANK YOU.

John was a kind and trusting man. He hired me as one of his first employees at the Great Falls Mc Donalds in 1969. I was in high school then and he made sure i had a shift that would work with school hours.
