Merle Brunsvold Obituary

MISSOULA - Former Billings, Great Falls and Laurel resident Merle Brunsvold, 89, of Missoula, a military veteran, died of natural causes Dec. 8 at a Missoula care center.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Butte.
Survivors include daughters Linda (Keith) Smith and Nancy (Jim) Cole; three grandchildren, Kibbie Jensen, Kaycie Olson and Ryan Cole; and three great-granddaughters.
Merle was born in Skaar, N.D. When he was a small child, his family moved to Billings, where he attended schools and graduated from Billings Senior High. He received a degree in forestry from the University of Montana and served in the Army Air Corps as a B-25 bomber pilot, first as a flight instructor, then with the 17th Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron in the South Pacific. During this time, he received a standard battlefield promotion to captain.
Following his military service, he was the Work Unit Conservationist for Cascade and Carbon counties before becoming the Director of the Carbon-Stillwater County RC and D project - U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Following his retirement from the Department of Agriculture, he went on to work in the private sector for Ecology and Environment.
Merle was most proud of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and his military service.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Audrey; and a grandson, Matthew Cole.
