William Horst Obituary

Dr. William "Peter" Horst M.D.

Stockett —William Peter Horst MD, age 66, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes November 1, 2015, at his home in Stockett, Montana.

A celebration of Peter's life will be held in the Rose Room Chapel at Croxford Funeral Home, Friday November 6, 2015, at 11:00 AM. Immediately followed by a remembrance luncheon at the Meadowlark Country Club.

Peter was born and raised in Crown Point, Indiana. He is an alumnus of Crown Point High School (1967), DePauw University (1971) and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (1975). Peter discovered his passion for urology while at CWRU, where he completed a urology residency after a surgical internship at Indiana University. Peter moved to Great Falls MT in 1982, where he joined the Great Falls Clinic and remained as a devoted partner until his death. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an alumni brother of Phi Sigma Kappa.

Peter married Margaret Jo Velardo in 1976 with whom he had two daughters during their marriage, Meghan and Sarah. In January 2011, following over 15 years of courtship, Peter married Tina Schott, with whom he developed a love of ranching and country living.

The caring, generous nature of Dr. 'Peter' Horst will be painfully missed by numerous patients, friends, family and partners. His dedication to patient care has been an inspiration to all who had the pleasure to work beside him.

Peter is survived by his wife, Tina Schott; daughter Sarah M Hörst of Baltimore, Maryland; and brothers John (Lynne); Carl (Marcia); Paul (Jackie); and sister Nancy (Doug) Drake; in addition to nieces, nephews, uncle and cousins.

Peter was preceded in death by infant daughter Meghan; father Dr. William N. Horst; and mother Jean Mason Horst.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr William Horst.
I am torn between grateful vs sad that I only was able to meet him via emails and phone calls. I had the opportunity to discuss treatment plans and options for his patients. I instantly knew of the passion he felt for his career and his patients and his desire to bring knew medical knowledge and treatments into the Great Falls, MT area.
I was excited to share and discuss new knowledge and opportunity with him only to learn of his passing. My heart hurt, and my heart instantly went out to all of his family, friends, patients and colleagues. I commit to Dr W Horst to continue to bring the newest treatments opportunities and knowledge to Great Falls Physicians particularly in the urological field. I will miss our talks about the advances in the urological treatment paradigm and logistical discussions and your argument of "its just over the mountains."
Rest in Peace my long distant friend, you will always be remembered!

Dear Tina, Sarah and family,
Our family was saddened to learn of Peters passing. Peter was a smart, hardworking, generous physician that helped many sick, hurting patients. I was so glad when Tina became his wife, he truly loved you deeply. Sarah, Pete was one justifiably proud papa!
I joined Peter immediately after completing my training and practiced with him for 5 years. I always felt Peter had my back. Libby, Drew and I send our condolences.

I am so saddened to have learned of Dr. Horst's death while visiting family in Great Falls yesterday. I have fond memories of him as a neighbor when we lived in Christianson addition. It was touching to see his devotion to Sarah who was such a daddy's girl. Later Dr. Horst helped care for my father-in-law, Helmut. It is hard to believe that such a vibrant, complex man has already passed from this life. Our condolences especially to Jo and Sarah. May God's eternal light shine upon him. Sincerely, Kathleen and Klaus Gliewe

Dr. Horst spoke to my Nursing class about Urological conditions. I will never forget the funny and bizarre cases he talked about. To this day I still bring them up. I was just talking about a few of the cases last week to coworkers. I knew him from the old Columbus Hospital, he was so nice, reminds me of a big teddy bear.
Very blessed to have learned from him. Bless you Dr. Horst, you have blessed so many!!!!

Dear Tina and Sarah, We were so saddened to hear of Peter's passing. He was our neighbor for over 30 years and also my husbands doctor and a very dear friend. We really missed him when you moved to the country. Miss our chats over the fence and calling his office when he would forget to close his garage door. His patients always came first. Always enjoyed hearing about his hunting trips. We are so sorry to have missed his service today, but had other commitments. Please know that you have been in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Horst Family,
I know you don't know me but I shared Pete's medical school years at Case Western. My husband Bill Nunery and I went to DePauw with Pete and then Bill and Pete were in med school together. During his single days Pete would come over to our house once a week to study with Bill and get a home cooked meal. After he married Jo we continued the tradition and Jo and I would throw together a meal (using as little money as possible because we had none) and all enjoy dinner and then the guys would study. It was a fun time in our lives and I adored sweet Pete. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

I wish to extend my sympathy to Tina, Sara, Nancy and all of Peter's brothers. Peter is my best friend from college since we were roommates senior year at DePauw and co-workers the next summer at US Steel in Gary, IN.

We were both sad that it didn't work out for us to practice in the same location. I know how much he loved Tina and the ranch life in Great Falls as well as his medical practice which he intended to continue as long as he could.

Peter understood life in an amazing way that I always found helpful.

I am truly saddened by Peter's premature death. I miss Peter's father and mother and I will miss Peter too.

I have known Peter since our IU Med and Case Western Reserve surgery training days. He is responsible for Chris and me moving West, and I always considered him a friend, peer, confidante, and role model for always keeping patient first in his care. I respected his regard and sensitivity for the staff as equals. He was in a word the "consummate" professional. We looked forward to practicing together again at the Great Falls Clinic in January, 2016. Chris and I send our prayers and support for Tina, Sarah (who he spoke of always with a father's unmistakeable pride) and the family members. Lost but not forgotten by those who loved him, thank you, Peter, for gracing us with your uniqueness and with your caring soul.

Dr. Horst was my doctor for almost 20 years and he made me laugh within the first five second--and he kept me laughing all those years. Our visits were brief post-surgery and during check-ups but that was always time enough to learn about his bride and The Ranch and, of course, about his lovely and brilliant daughter. Actually, we did a lot of bragging about our respective daughters. I will always remember his genuine concern for and kindness toward his patients, his sense of humor and his goodness. I shall miss him.

Pete and I were classmates, study partners, baseball teammates, and friends at Crown Point High School during the mid-sixties. He was intelligent, athletic, and always a pleasure to be around and will be missed by all who knew him even before he became a physician.

I last saw Pete after our 25th high school reunion when I invited him to go canoeing. He was on a tight schedule that didn't allow for much time but we went to a marsh that was only five miles from town. He said he could spend an hour but we ended up staying three. Golden memory when he asked if I would bring his dad there as well. His dad had delivered me 43 years earlier.

Rest in Peace Pete,

Your friend,

Dr. Jim Gentleman, D.O.

November 4, 2015

We were deeply saddened to read of Dr. Horst passing. Dr. was my Dad's doctor back in the 80's and then our paths crossed again a few years back, when he became my husbands Dr. He not only was my husband's Dr., he was our friend! We loved his hunting stories and a real peace would come over him when he spoke of the ranch and how his wife "kept him on the move". Once after one of my husband's surgeries, Dr. came out to tell me how things went and I was knitting and he went on to tell about a hat that his daughter had sent him (one that she had made him, if my memory serves me correctly). Our medical community has a hole in it, now that Dr. Horst has been called home. And what also makes us very sad, is that he will never get to work in his beloved NEW hospital, that we heard so much about. Love and prayers to all his family. With deepest sympathy, Carol and Paul Moes
