Kurt Smith Obituary

Kurt Smith, 68, died on Monday, March 20, 2023 in Plano, Texas. Kurt was born in Greeley and lived most of his life there. He and his family moved to Plano in 2009. Kurt attended Greeley schools and graduated from Greeley Central in 1972. Kurt is survived by his wife of 33 years, Deborah, son Mason (Laura), son Dylan, grandchildren Cooper, Lucy, Caleb and Josie Smith, sister Cyd Smith, brothers Craig (Debbie) and Scott (Michele) Smith, Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Linda and CW Burgess, and sister-in-law Shawna Nelson, brother-in-law Roland Bruntz and nephews Matt Burgess, Blake Smith (Julia), Chad Schaffer (Lynette), Christian Nelson and nieces Jordan Nelson and Tori Jackson (Mike), best friends Kelly Austin and Ann Stordahl and numerous cousins. Kurt Smith began his drumming career at the age of 15. He played in a band called Colorado from 1970 until 1972. Alpha Centauri was formed in 1972 with Randy Thompson, Garth Hannum, and Jess Redmon. Alpha Centauri recorded an album in Canada in 1977. It has been re-mastered to a CD and continues to be for sale at Rock Candy, a UK company. Videos of Alpha Centauri playing on a television station in Canada can still be seen on YouTube. Following the breakup of Alpha Centauri, Kurt and Randy formed Eyez with Bill Hokenson. After taking some time off, Kurt and Kelly decided to start playing again and formed Just Us with Bill Reitfors. Randy Thompson then joined Just Us and they became Full Circle. All the bands were popular in the Greeley area and Kurt never stopped enjoying playing. Following his career as a drummer, Kurt became a respected and valued painter. He worked with various contractors for over 20 years. In 2009, Kurt moved his family to Texas to start a contracting business with his best friend of 43 years, Kelly Austin. Kurt enjoyed being a contractor and tackling a new approach to construction. He felt a sense of accomplishment when all of the remodeling was done and the house was sold Kurt was proceeded in death by his father, Harold Smith, mother Bettie Smith, grandparents Walter and Zoe Smith and John and Emma Faktor, niece Tara Smith, mother-in-law Mary Bruntz, father-in-law Roland Bruntz and brother-in-law Michael Bruntz.
