Suzan Leyba Obituary

Suzan "Sue" D. Leyba was smart, funny, sarcastic, caring, bossy, and stubborn. Before she passed away peacefully on June 3rd at McKee Medical Center following a brief illness, Sue brought many strong opinions, fits of laughter, Christmas cookies, and colorful sayings into this world. She is survived by her husband Tom Leyba, son Christopher (Ruthie) Leyba, granddaughter Olivia Leyba, sister-in-law Linda Stach, aunt Barbara Larson, cousins Carol (Dave) Baker, Eric (Teresa) Larson, Sarah (David) Barker, Brian Baker, Jake Larson and Tyler Larson. She was preceded in death by her parents Tom and Betty Stach, and her brothers Robert and Cory Stach. Sue's big personality touched the lives of many. Among those influenced and loved by Sue are her countless students. Following college, Sue began her thirty-year teaching career in rural Nebraska and then spent over twenty-five years teaching elementary school in LaSalle, CO. Multiple generations of families would come to know her signature snap and point. She extended her love of kids into her private life as well, frequently serving as the head "band mom" for the Greeley West High School band. After retiring in 2002, Sue lived a true retiree lifestyle. When not traveling to Europe, Central America, Alaska, the Caribbean, China, and dozens of national parks, she spent her time reading, gardening, baking, collecting Southwest art, volunteering for political campaigns, and being a doting grandmother. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00pm on July 1st at Triple S Events Center, 901 35th Ave, Greeley, CO 80634. Guests are asked to bring their fond memories and stories of Sue to share with other attendees at this informal gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Park Service https://www.nps.gov/getinvolved/donate.htm. Think of Sue when you blurt out exactly what is on your mind, eat cinnamon candy, rant about politics, or snort while laughing.

Tom, so sorry to hear about Sue. Our son Tom just found out and told me. You two were a great pair, great talent, great fun, and she was always doting on the band kids. Michelle and I are very sad knowing such a nice caring person was called home, we believe too soon.
