Genie Williams Obituary

Williams, Genie

Genie Williams, passed away peacefully at her home in Green Bay, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at the age of 82. She was born December 19, 1934, in Green Bay to the late Harry W. and Renee (Dendooven) Williams. She attended high school at St. Joseph Academy and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from St. Norbert's college followed by graduate studies at Marquette University. Following her studies, Genie worked at the VA hospital in Downey, Ill where she was director of lab services. After moving back to Green Bay to help take care of her parents she began working for the Brown County Coroner's office. While there she held various positions from deputy to chief deputy and eventually served as Brown County Coroner. Genie served as Coroner for 4 years. During her service at the Coroner's office she had the opportunity to help many people during their time of loss. She always was very understanding and consoling in that role.

Genie had many interests, but sailing was one of her passions. She crewed on many sailboats, racing in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Great Lakes. At one time she had started a small business teaching sailing to beginners. Genie once motored a sailboat down the Mississippi from Chicago to New Orleans. She also took a boat from the east coast through the St. Lawrence Seaway into the great lakes. Genie enjoyed playing golf during her younger years and watching the PGA events in later years and of course she was an avid Packer fan. She started every morning solving the papers cross word puzzle and was also a fanatical reader and a gourmet cook. Genie will also be remembered for being ingenious, being a good story teller, being strong willed, witty, and creative.

She is survived by her loving brother, Harry "Chip" Williams, Cambridge, MN and lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Susan Mazur.

Friends may call at the Proko-Wall Funeral Home, 1630 E. Mason St. on Monday, October 30, 2017, from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, for a time of remembrance. Per Genie's wishes there will be no formal funeral service. Burial in the Allouez Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to Genie's family at www.prokowall.com. In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund has been established in her name.

The family would like to say thanks to Dr. Villwock (the Chairman!) and his wonderful staff for the care they provided Genie for many years. We would also like to thank Home Instead Senior Care for their help and Unity Hospice for their help and support.

Genie was a great neighbor to us on Van Buren Street. She was always on top of anything happening on our street! We all treasure the Xmas ornaments she made for each of us in the 70's. Genie had many talents and will be missed.

Genie was an excellent teacher and mentor to many. While on paramedic clinical training at St Vincent hospital I spoke and observed many facets of the coroner. It piqued my interest and I ended up working for the Medical Examiners Office for 20 years going through the ranks as she did from deputy to chief deputy and finally Interim Chief Medical Examiner while Dane County prepared to take over. I would often see her in the hospital lab with her friend Jan Fox and we'd talk about the old days. What a great person. Even after she retired she continued to support her friends in the office when politics made it hard to continue. Genie will be missed by all the old Coroner/Medical Examiner friends she had. RIP Genie.

Chip and family ~ your family has always been special to our family. Genie was always the one to say, what's the matter now! I recall all those days of playing Canasta at your home. Genie would always stop in and say hi when I worked at St. Vincent's. She was always kind, friendly, and willing to help or give advice. She sure was there when our family members were gravely ill. I will never forget her hearty laugh. We sure had a good time with her. I am so happy that I visited with her. May you cherish all those fond memories; my thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
