Lorraine Oswald Obituary

Oswald, Lorraine

Lorraine J. Oswald, age 90 of Kewaunee died on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. She was born on July 17, 1924 in Two Rivers to the late Walter and Ella (Mattek) Kracht.

She married Gerald H. Oswald on July 3, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Two Creeks. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1977.

Lorraine graduated from Door-Kewaunee Normal School in Algoma and later got her Bachelors Degree from UW-Oshkosh in 1971. In a career covering forty years, Lorraine began teaching in a one room school house moving on to country schools and ending her teaching career with the first grade at Hillcrest Elementary School in Kewaunee. She was famous for "hands on learning" like hatching chicks from eggs, making apple sauce after visiting the apple orchard or making pancakes with maple syrup when visiting the maple farm. Among her other accomplishments was taking flying lessons during WWII for the Civil Air Patrol. She was one lesson away from solo flight before the cold weather set in and then the war ended, but her passion for flight did not wane though marriage, family and teaching came to the forefront.

Lorraine was a founding parent of the East Shore Industries for adults who are intellectually challenged. This was work that included fund raising, afternoons of Bunco, Sheephead, raffles, silent auctions, meeting and more meetings. Her efforts changed the landscape for the intellectually challenged in Kewaunee County.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law: Gary and Doris Oswald, Kewaunee; Dale Oswald, Algoma; five daughters and two sons-in-law: Patti Hedeen, Sturgeon Bay; Ann and Michael Norkofski, Neenah; Ruth Oswald, Oshkosh; Peggy and Robert Jaskolski, Sturgeon Bay; Sara Oswald and Carla Byrnes, Sturgeon Bay; six grandchildren: Amy Jo (Gene) Goodavish; Andy (Charr) Oswald; Nichole Hedeen; Barret Hedeen; Justus Hedeen; Kristin Jaskolski and one great grandchild: Aurora Oswald.

She was preceded in death by her brother: Walter Kracht and a sister: Shirley Lockwood.

Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Two Creeks until the time of services. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. by Pastor Don Frelitz officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Carlton.
