Ronald Weisshappel Obituary

Weisshappel, Ronald B.

Ronald Weisshappel, age 83, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017.

Ron was born in Berwyn, Illinois to the late Evelyn and Bruno Weiss-happel. While most of his childhood was spent in Berwyn being a big brother to Bob and Karen, Ron also enjoyed visiting his many relatives in Wisconsin. He would often talk fondly about visiting his grandparents in Madison or working on his uncle's farm in Rhinelander during the summer. Ron graduated from Morton High School in 1952.

Ron worked for the Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) for most of his career - first in Chicago and later in Green Bay. Before retiring, he worked for the Fox River Valley Railroad (FRVR).

It was while working for the C&NW in Chicago that Ron met the love of his life, Joyce Sup. Ron and Joyce were married in 1960 and had two children: Joe and Tom. He greatly enjoyed being with his family and especially loved to drive around with Joyce - so they could explore the world together.

While working full-time, Ron obtained his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University's night school. After night school, he never lost his love of mathematics and physics. If you had an hour or two (or three) to spare, Ron would gladly talk to you about topics such as mathematical topology, chaos theory, black holes, or relativity!

Ron was an avid bicyclist for over 30 years. He biked to and from work every day - in every season and in every weather condition. On the weekends, Ron enjoyed biking from Green Bay to Pulaski, Oconto Falls, or Shawano and was a big fan of both the Mountain-Bay and the Fox River trails.

If there was any snow to be found (even if he had to walk into the woods to find it), Ron could always be found cross-country skiing at the Reforestation Camp in Suamico, at Barkhausen Waterfowl Reserve in Suamico, or at He-Nis-Ra Park in Green Bay. During the winter, Ron was either skiing - or getting ready to ski. He occasionally enjoyed entering into a few competitive races and even managed to earn a few trophies in the process!

Ron became interested in running somewhat later in life. In addition to running around his neighborhood in the early morning hours, Ron also enjoyed entering local races such as the Bellin Run - in which Ron continued to run until he was 69 years old.

Ron is sadly missed and survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce; his sons Joe (Kathy) Weisshappel and Tom (Sara) Weisshappel; his granddaughters Kristin (Josh) Lawrence and Kate Weisshappel; his grandson Lucas Weiss-happel; his great-grandsons Kaden and Karter Lawrence; his brother Bob (Debbie) Weisshappel; his sister Karen Franck; his brother-in-law Roger (Dorothy) Sup; and many nieces and nephews.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents Bruno and Evelyn Weisshappel, his father-in-law and mother-in-law Frank and Emily Sup, his brother-in-law Allen Franck, his brother-in-law Frank Sup Jr., and his sister-in-law Carol Marquez.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 22 from 9am to 11am at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1350 Bond St., Green Bay, WI. Funeral service begins at 11am with a lunch to follow.

Our family would like to thank everyone at Bayshore Village Nursing Home for making Ron feel at home these past four years.
