Stella Barry Obituary

Barry, Stella J.

Stella J. Barry, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, mentor and friend, died April 19, 2014, at the age of 98. Her determination, personal strengths, and sense of humor, nurtured by deep faith, made Mom an enviable example of how to live life. She was truly inspirational to all who knew her. Having been widowed for 57 years, Mom is now reunited in peace with our father, Leo.

She was born January 21, 1916, to John and Ellen (Brockman) Van Dyck. Stella celebrated the sacraments of First Communion June 8, 1924, of Confirmation April 19, 1925, and of Marriage January 16, 1943, at St. Willebrord Parish. Mom had a special place in her heart for St. Mary of the Angels and the women she worked with as a parish volunteer.

Stell retired from the Corporate Office of WPS in August of 1994, after a 29 year career. Being a homemaker again filled the hours and gave her joy. Her daughters and their families were thrilled to have the treats of her labor. Cooking a hardy meal, baking chocolate chip cookies, scrumptious pies and desserts, stirring and wrapping caramels, were all activities that kept her smiling.

Stell is survived by her children and their spouses, Colleen and William Bath, Susan and Raymond Screbant; her grandchildren, Angie (Tim) Crenshaw, Gretchen (Todd) Martin, Amy (Nick) Kearin, Bill (Deanna) Bath, Michael Bath, Steve Bath, Emily (Matt) Lorenzen, Julie Screbant; great-grandchildren, Jack and Kate Crenshaw, Jake and Henry Martin, Ray, Nikki, Mary and Jake Kearin, Grayson and Harrison Bath, Ben, Cara and Madelyn Lorenzen; her brother, Florian Van Dyck; a sister-in-law, Patricia Van Dyck; nephews and nieces, Bert Scanlan, Donald and Katy Baeten, Bonnie and Wally Mason, Joyce Daanen, Mary Ellen and Ed Meyer, Sharon and Bill Trindal, June and Robert Heck, Barb and Larry Stein, Janice Van Dyck, Carol Jean and Bob Effert, Kathy and Steve Zais, Gretchen Van Dyck, Mary Beth and Kent Potterton, Julie Ponschok, Paul and Julie Van Dyck; great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; great-grandsons, Ryan Crenshaw and Evan Cooper Bath; her parents, Ellen and John Van Dyck; sisters and brothers-in-law, Loretta and Hugo Baeten, Evelyn and Sylvester Daanen, Helen and Orville Raymaker; a brother, John Van Dyck; sisters-in-law, Mary Van Dyck, Sue Van Dyck and Verna Van Dyck; nephews Jack Van Dyck and Ronald Daanen and a niece, Ellen Ann Scanlan.

Please join Stell's family and friends in celebrating her life on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, 645 S. Irwin Ave., Green Bay. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Bishop Robert Morneau celebrating. Burial will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Proko-Wall Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Please visit www.prokowall.com to send on-line condolences. Donations in Stell's memory can be made to Unity Hospice or St. Mary of the Angels Parish.

Colleen, Sue & Family,
Deeply saddened to hear about Aunt Stell. A truly shining example of the human spirit at its best. I can't ever remember a time when she wasn't happy. Our only regret, is that our daughter Isabel has missed out on meeting such a wonderful soul. While it may be difficult, do not let the sadness consume you. Celebrate her life and all those she has touched. The picture is worth more than a thousand words! Love to all. Take care!

I was saddened to hear of Grand-Aunt Stell's passing. What a wonderful life she lived! Reading through such a beautiful legacy, I couldn't help but smile remembering the last time we were all together at Mark and Peggy Mason's place for Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Wally's anniversary party and Stell had me laughing so hard over something to do with the outhouses that I nearly wet my pants. What a joy she brought to everyone and our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Love to you all, Ann, Terry and girls.

Sue and Colleen,
I was so sorry to hear about your mom. I have just read the beautiful obituary. I am sorry I can't be in Green Bay for the service, but wanted you both to know that I thought the world of your mom. She was a very strong, wonderful lady who worked so hard to raise you both without your dad. I know you value the years you have had with your mom where she could see your children and grandchildren all grow. I will always remember how good she was to my mother. Love to all. Mary

My deepest condolences go out to Stella's family and friends. I greatly enjoyed being one of Stella's many caregivers at Carrington Manor. She was one of the strongest people I have ever met and I will never forget her beautiful personality. I loved talking sports with her and hearing about all of her past experiences.
