XENIA — David E. Funk Sr., age 80, of Xenia, OH; passed away Monday, February 22, 2016 at Greene Memorial Hospital. He was born May 21, 1935 in Xenia, Ohio, the son of Marion F. and Margaret (Spellman) Funk. David's mother died when he was very young, which caused him to be nutured by his many aunts and uncles, until his father remarried. He grew up on a farm, which is where he developed his love of tractors and woodworking and the ability to "tinker" with things. He played football and basketball in high school, graduating from Xenia Central High. He was a Machine Gunner in the US Army National Guard. He retired after 42 years with the Dunbauld Welding Co. David was a member of the Oldtown United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all. In addition to his mother, David was preceded in death by his father and step mother: Marion and Bernice Funk; his first wife and mother of his children: Vivian Jones Funk; a step son: Robert Lewis and brother: Dennis Funk. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Scott) Funk, whom he married September 25, 1983; children: Vicki Lynn (Pete) Rammel; David E. "Jr." (Debbie) Funk; Greg (Chris) Funk and Tracey (Darold) Barker; step children: Anita Walker and Matthew Owen Lewis; sisters: Judith Hurley and Karen (John) Gordley; a sister-in-law: Kathleen Funk; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends, including Dick and Connie Strayer. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care and support given to David and themselves by the staff of both Greene Memorial Hospital ICU and Greene Oaks Nursing Center, and a special thanks to Dr. Latha Venkatesh. Funeral service will be held 2 PM Friday, February 26th at McColaugh Funeral Home, Inc., 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia with Rev. Kenneth Martin officiating. Interment to follow in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. Visitation will be held 1 PM Friday until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Family Violence Prevention Center, 380 Bellbrook Ave., Xenia; the Jeremiah Tree, 118 W.
