JAMESTOWN — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard "Dick" D. Matthews of Jamestown, OH. Born on March 12, 1938, in Greene County, OH, Dick dedicated his life to farming and community service. He attended the Jamestown Church of Christ, a lifelong member of the Old Timers Club, Greene County FFA Alumni Association, the New Jasper Volunteer Fire Department, the Fayette County Tired Iron Club, the Greene County Cattleman's Association, and his dedication as a 4H Advisor. His passion for farming and machinery was evident in his membership in the Red Power Club. Dick is preceded by his parents, S.S. and Virginia (DeHaven) Matthews, children, Tamela Sue and Richard D. Matthews, II,; brothers, Robert, Roger and Phillip Matthews; sister, Ruby Rector and sisters-in-law, Barbara Colliver and Pauline Shoemaker. Dick is survived by his loving spouse, Shirley Sue (Cummings) Matthews, to whom married on November 30, 1958, and they shared many years of laughter, love, and partnership. Besides his wife, he is also survived by his devoted daughter and son-in-law,, Pamela Sue and John Hiser of Jamestown; the love of his life, grandchildren, Hallie Sue Hiser, Matthew John Hiser, Cole Stephen Hiser; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, John Cummings of Hillsboro and Ferris and Patty Cummings of Hillsboro, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dr. Mary Lou and John Patton of Media, PA.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Throughout his life, Dick was known for his warm and welcoming nature, his love for his family and especially grandchildren, and his unwavering commitment to his farming endeavors. A people person through and through, Dick's kindness and genuine nature endeared him to all who knew him. His legacy of community service, hard work, and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Friends, family, and community members are invited to pay their respects and honor Dick's memory from 11:00 AM until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the Jamestown Church of Christ, 152 W. Washington St., Jamestown, OH 45335. Funeral services to celebrate Dick's life will be held at Jamestown Church of Christ, 152 W. Washington St., Jamestown, OH. 45335, on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 1:00 P.M. with Steve Rich officiating. Graveside Services will be 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the Marshall Cemetery, 10968 St. St. 124, Hillsboro, OH 45133, Donations may be made to the Jamestown Church of Christ or to the Silver Creek Township Fire Department, 28 E. Xenia St., Jamestown, OH. 45335. I am saddened to hear of Dick´s passing. I am sending my condolences to Shirley, Pam and all of his family. His smile & personality were infectious even on his bad days. I will be unable to attend but will certainly keep you all in my prayers. You have a wonderful family. I will miss seeing him.
