GREENTOWN, IN - Emma Dora Holt, 90, passed away Thursday at 3:01 p.m. surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born Emma Dora Waddle Nov. 2, 1931, at home to Nathan Blevins and Allie Verina (Fox) Waddle, the sixth of 10 children. Emma was raised in the Horse Creek/Pleasant Hill community in Greene County and was a member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, until she moved to Marion, Indiana, in 1954.
Emma attended Chuckey High School and received her GED later in life, in Marion.
Emma worked for 30 ½ years at St. Regis Paper Company, until it closed in 1985. In addition, while working at St. Regis, she worked at the Emily Flynn Home as a receptionist, retiring after 25 years. Not ready to give up working, she was employed at Hassler and Brookfield until she was 77 years old.
In Marion, she was known as the "goose lady" because she made and sold outfits for concrete geese. She also sold Avon and volunteered at St. Martin's kitchen for several years. She attended Unity Christian Church. At the age of 85, Emma was baptized by the minister and her son at Jerome Christian Church.
Not only was Emma a hard worker, but she enjoyed many hobbies. She enjoyed sewing and loved to crochet. She made many crochet crafts, but nothing tops her hand made baby blankets. Whenever she heard someone was expecting, she got out her yarn and crochet needles and got to work. As perfect as could be, she recently finished her last two blankets for her great-grandsons to have for their first-born children later on. Flowers, houseplants, and gardening were a good way for Emma to relax. She had a green thumb and could grow anything.
Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by son: William C. (Connie) Holt Jr. of Greentown; her daughter: Dora Annette Holt of Denver, Colorado, and Jim Porter of Sheridan; two granddaughters: Amanda Suzanne (Jason) Paul of Russiaville, Indiana, and Allison Nicole (Stuart) Woods of Fairland, Indiana; three great-grandsons: Boston Ray Woods, Zander Kent Paul, and Ethan Woods; a brother: Rex Waddle of Greeneville, Tennessee; along with Bonnie Lamb of Liberty, TN and Blanche Locke of Greeneville, TN; many nieces and nephews; and her special friend: Bill Musick.
Preceding her in death was her infant son: Sammy Clifton Holt; her parents; brothers: Frank (Louise) Waddle, Sam (Zella) Waddle, Charles Waddle, Bruce Waddle; sisters: Ann Bohannon and Sadie (Webster) Broyles; as well as nephew: Floyd (Jason) Lamb who lost his life in Vietnam.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hasler-Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. Friends may visit with the family from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund.
Emma never lost her love for Horse Creek and the mountains and spent as much time there as possible.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Chuckey, Tennessee.
