Ron H. Smith, age 87, of Greeneville, passed away Monday morning at Durham-Hensley Health and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Old Hickory, a son of the late Hubert and Elnora Smith.
Ron served nine years in the Tennessee National Guard.
He was a retired engineer from TRW after 32 years of service.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Greeneville, where he had served as an usher and teacher of the Koinonia Sunday School Class. He also served on the Personnel Committee and led Divorce Care for several years. Ron was a member of Boy Scouts of America and Gideon's International.
He loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed playing golf. Ron and his wife, Mary Jo, loved traveling. Ron loved to hike the Appalachian Trail with his friend, Jim Best.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 44 years: Mary Jo Smith; daughters: Tammy and John Petty of Lebanon, Tennessee, and Lisa Vanover of Greeneville; four grandchildren: Robyn and Martin Majors, Courtney Mathews all of Mt. Juliet, Taylor and Cameron Petty, and Hailee and Jeff Campbell, all of Greeneville; eight great-grandchildren: Braxton, Brooklyn, Braiden, and Brennon Majors, Kayden and Kamryn Mathews, and Addilyn and Kennedi Campbell; a brother and sister-in-law: Gary and Linda Smith of Olive Branch, Mississippi; and two devoted nieces: Heather Shelton and Michelle Cutshaw.
In addition to his parents, Ron was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bruce and Rena Tipton.
The family expresses a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice and Durham-Hensley Health & Rehabilitation.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Doughty-Stevens Chapel with Dr. David Green and the Rev. James Best officiating.
Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will include Taylor Petty, John Petty, Jeff Campbell, Max Funk, Bryce Lamb, and Daniel Myers.
Honorary pallbearers will include Fred Sorrells, Mike Roberts, Jim Best, Gary Lamb, Rick Benton, and members of the Koinonia Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or to First Baptist Church.
