Jeff Barrett Obituary
Jeffery Dee Barrett, 66, of Greenfield, IN, had loved ones waiting for him as he began his eternal life with his Lord on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. There is no doubt he's already found a Harley in heaven to continue his love and thrill of the ride and possibly a few garage sales too.
Jeff was born June 12, 1959, to Richard E. Barrett and Barbara A. (Rose) Barrett in Greenfield, Indiana.
He graduated from Greenfield-Central High School and worked in maintenance for the State of Indiana's Department of Corrections in Pendleton, IN for 32 years before retiring in January 2025. He opened Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility and won multiple awards through his tenure.
Completing his service with the State of Indiana was no small feat. Jeff was stubborn and that stubbornness served him well and allowed him to become "the miracle man." Jeff had a double lung transplant on July 12, 2011, and returned to work following that transplant. He had strokes yet went back to work again and again. It's just what he did. Jeff believed in hard work, earning an honest living, providing for his family, showing up and helping others, and never asking for anything in return-all traits instilled in him at a young age by his parents and evident throughout his life.
Jeff defied all odds post-transplant and surprised many when they heard his story of all he'd overcome. People couldn't believe what he'd faced and for "such a young man"-a phrase he loved hearing. That is the legacy Jeff leaves behind-stubborn in the best way, a resilient fighter to the very end, winning battle after battle. You could never count him out. The story of Jeff's lung transplant journey gave hope and reassurance to so many IU Health pre- and post-lung transplant patients and their families as they got to hear of the miracle that was him and be comforted by the better life and longevity of life that awaited them post-transplant.
Left behind to cherish and share the many fond memories of Jeff and carry on with his same determination and enduring strength are daughter, Whitney Barrett; granddaughter, Savannah Barrett whom he always referred to as "his angel"; former spouse and friend, Marsha Barrett (Ed Baker); sister Melanie (Bobby) Eaks; and several nieces and nephews.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph Harvey and Fred Barrett; maternal grandparents, Fred "Peep" Rose and Betty "Mamew" (Mueller) Rose; paternal grandparents; Earl and Wilma Barrett.
At Jeff's request, no services will be held. He preferred laughs over tears and asked friends and family to get together, swap stories of him (even the embarrassing ones), and celebrate for he's at rest now and his final battle has been won.
