Margaret Greenwood, formerly of Brown County and Greenfield Ann Zapf Margaret Ann (New) Zapf, age 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, June 10, 2025, at Grand Victorian of Greenwood, surrounded by her loving daughters. A former 48-year resident of Brown County, Margaret's spirit touched the lives of many, and her legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew her.
Margaret was born September 1, 1942 in Indianapolis, to her parents, the late Albert and Frances (Richey) New. She was a 1960 graduate of Greenfield High School and went on to earn her Associate Degree from Indiana University Business College. On July 23, 1963, she married the love of her life, Michael Paul Zapf, in Elwood. Together, they shared 38 wonderful years of marriage, raising two daughters and creating a home filled with love and laughter until his passing in 2003.
Margaret retired as the Assistant Director of Debt Management at Indiana University after 26 years of service. While employed at the University, she served as a faculty speaker at national seminars and conferences. She was a member of the Greenwood Christian Church and a former member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church where she served with the local food pantry and with Mother's Cupboard in Brown County. She was also a former member of Shepherd of the Hills Church in Bean Blossom where she was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and was the organist from 1979-2005. Her musical talents brought joy to many and were a testament to her deep faith.
Margaret found joy in knitting, restoring and collecting antiques, and traveling to new places. She was an avid reader and became a published author in 2011. Most of all, she will be remembered for her love of family.
She will be missed by her daughters; Trudy Sturgeon and Angela Cherry both of Greenwood; grandchildren, Isaac Sturgeon, Callie (Marcus) Payne, Mitchell Cherry, Madalyn Cherry, Megan Cherry and Michael Cherry; great grandchildren, Greyson and Hazel and sister Yvonne Hatfield of North Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Michael Zapf.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 14th at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
