COLFAX Alfred "Al" "Red" Mason Frye, 90, went to be with the Lord July 17, 2017. Funeral services celebrating his life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Andy Lambert and Pastor Christi Taylor. Al was born August 30, 1926 to the late John Frye and Lockie Frye Boardwine in Glades Springs, Virginia. He served the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Division during World War II. He retired from Newport News Shipyard after 44 years. He was a great Christian man who was very active in his church. He loved to travel, taking trips all over the world. He even received a medal from his Sunday School class for traveling over a month with his wife, Barbara, and two of her sisters. He loved to take all four of his grandchildren on trips by himself. He loved his family and was very active in their lives. Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Frye of the home; daughter, Sandra Frye Oaten and Ronnie of Charlotte, NC; son, Richard Frye and Debbie of Ferrum, VA; grandchildren, Amy Frye Myrick and Brad, Shaunn Oaten, Erin Frye and Jake Rosenthal, and Lindsay Oaten Audet and Chris; three step-grandchildren, Conner Jones, Jonathan Jones, and Grace Jones; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Betty Ross and Jimmy, Bonnie Bronner, and Sue House, and many extended family and friends. The family will visit with friends from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Oak Ridge United Methodist Church's Building Fund, 2424 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge, NC 27310.
