Barbara Hamlin McSwain, 97, of Danville, formerly of High Point, passed away, Sunday, December 24, 2023, at Commonwealth Stratford House in Danville.

Barbara was born on October 25, 1926, to the late Claude Hamlin and Axie Adams Andrews. She was married for 72 years to Van H. McSwain who preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents and her husband she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen McSwain Kane and two sisters, Loise Talton and Mary Thorpe.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Barbara McSwain Nordon and her husband, Andrew of Danville, Deborah Ann McSwain of Mt. Airy; son-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey Kane of Vista, CA; grandchildren, Heather Rhodarmer and husband, Calvin, Jeremiah Clark Nordon and wife, Amy, Holly McSwain Fuqua and husband Marvin, Marshall Van-Allen McSwain; great granddaughter, Destiny Faith Rhodarmer; half-sister, Claudia Thomas of Wilmington; half-brother, Charles Hamlin of High Point; and sister-in-law, Carolyn McSwain Carle.

She spent several years as a Girl Scout leader, worked as an elementary school crossing guard and also worked in retail but her most important work was being a dedicated homemaker and mother. She was very active at and devoted to Rankin Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a sixth grade Sunday School teacher and also led the sixth grade Bible School classes in the summer.

The family wishes to express their profound appreciation to the staff of Commonwealth Stratford House Senior Living for the phenomenal care they gave our Mother and Grandmother during her final days.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 2024, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point with Rev. Debra Swing officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024, at the funeral home.

Inurnment will immediately follow the memorial service at Oakwood Cemetery Mausoleum in High Point.
