Charles Brett Obituary

Brett, Dr. Charles Burden

Charles Burden Brett, MD, passed away at home on November 19, 2021, at the age of 77. Son of the late Hampton Fleming Brett and Bertha Spivey Brett, Charles grew up in Windsor, NC, and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He went on to graduate from the UNC School of Medicine in 1971. He served in the United States Navy for eight years, completing his residency and serving as a pediatrician at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.

In 1978, Charles joined the Sam Ravenel Clinic in Greensboro, now Carolina Pediatrics of the Triad, where he worked until his retirement in 2019. Known by many of his patients as "Dr. Charles," he dedicated his life to taking care of countless generations of children and families in the community. In addition to his practice, he was on the staff of the pediatric hospitals in Greensboro where he cared for hospitalized infants, children, and teenagers. He served as Chief of Pediatrics at Wesley Long Hospital and was a member of numerous committees for pediatric medicine throughout his career.

Dr. Brett was recently recognized by the UNC School of Medicine for his 50th year in the field. Throughout those fifty years, he mentored numerous medical students, pediatric interns, and residents. He was loved by his patients for his instant smile, infectious laugh, and quick wit. He will be remembered as a superior pediatrician with excellent diagnostic and clinical skills and as a doctor who always put the concerns of his patients and parents first.

Outside of his fulfilling medical career, Charles was a self-taught master gardener with limitless energy for sharing his passion for gardening and landscape architecture. His spirit will live on in the gardens of many, as he encouraged the new gardener with gifts from his own shade garden, designed backyard gardens for friends, and created and implemented the landscape design for Carolina Pediatrics of the Triad.

Dr. Brett is survived by his daughter, Maggie Brett Kennedy (Hunter) of Charleston, South Carolina, his son, Taylor Brett (Karen) of Greensboro and two beloved grandchildren, Hampton Kennedy and Noah Brett. The family thanks Albert Horne for his incredible friendship and caregiving over the last several years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children's Home Society of North Carolina at https://www.chsnc.org/donate/. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. Unfortunately, I just learned of Dr. Brett´s passing at my youngest 2 well visits today. The ironic part of this, I was just thinking a few days ago about writing to someone about how great of a doctor he was to all 5 of my children. I must say it was devastating to hear about him leaving the practice but even more to find out he´s no longer here. I was hoping to hear he´s out traveling the world. Rest assured, he did his due diligence and was very passionate about taking care of all his patients. I´m so thankful I chose you for my kids doctor. Also, I´m forever grateful about how you treated my kids (22,18, 17, 11, 4) with the utmost respect and making me feel comfortable as a young parent. You never passed judgment and treated me like any other adult. Each visit was a learning experience, there was never a time he didn´t teach me something new. Thank you, thank you for the newborn hospital visits, formula, reassurance, resourcefulness, and overall outstanding care you provided to my children and myself. Well done! Until we meet again, continue to rest in heavenly peace.

A memorable visit to his back yard garden on St. Andrews inspired me to plant a pink rose growing up into my white dogwood tree and out the top. After a few years, my dogwood blossoms turned pink, due to the fusion of two crossing limbs.
He also pretty much saved one of my children's lives with a very astute, middle of the night diagnosis.

I´m so sorry to hear that your dad passed away. He was the best doctor for my three girls-they loved going to see Dr. Brett even when they were sick. I hated for them to be sick, but I loved to visit with him so much-funniest man with a quick wit and tons of insight! His diagnoses were on point, and he listened to children and parents. He was a rare breed of doctor. Will greatly miss him.

So sad to hear of Dr Brett´s passing. He took care of our daughter for many years and was always a kind, caring and compassionate man. He would pick on me and ask me where my list of questions was each visit and smile. Dr Brett taught me so many old time remedies that worked wonderful- will never forget him. Best pediatrician ever.

When I was pregnant with my first child 22 years ago, I had no idea who to request for my pediatrician but a friend recommended Dr. Brett. One of the best decisions, amongst many, that I ever made for my girls. He was the kind of doctor who put you at ease immediately as a new mom. Giving confidence and reassurance that you were doing the best for you child. His gentle manner coupled with a wicked sense of humor made trips to see him enjoyable. I always said that you left a visit with Dr Brett feeling like you had the most wonderful special child in the world. I´m sure he made every parent who was lucky to have him in their family´s lives feel the same way. He will be missed by many but his memory lives on in all the precious lives he touched.

We will miss Charles. He was a super nice guy and our favorite pediatrician. At the time our daughter, Sarah was born , he was not accepting new patients. I was devastated... he made an exception. We were thrilled for 19 years. His smile lit up a room and his wit brought much laughter.
We will miss him dearly. We are praying for you all.

For over 20 years, Charles was our family pediatrician and many more years as our neighbor and good friend! He had a wonderful way of disarming little ones with his great sense of humor and contagious laugh. I actually enjoyed Dr. visits with the children when he was in the office. God bless him.....he reassured so many parents with no -nonsense advice and a gentle sense of humor. His devotion to his practice and patients is rare to find these days. Love to Maggie and Taylor!

Dr. Brett was a great doctor I hated to see him retire, He took care of my Niece and Nephews and my daughter, then he took care of my grandchildren. When we found out my grandson was going blind he did everything possible to get him the help he needed. He is and always will have a very special place in my heart. We will miss him and be praying for the family.

I took my girls to Dr. Charles for years. He was such a wonderful pediatrician. We lost our youngest daughter this year but I know my oldest daughter, Mary Kristen, joins me as we think about the memories of Dr. Charles, his friendship and his care.
