Chung Suh Obituary

Sun Chung Sun Suh entered the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the kingdom of Heaven on July 12, 2023 at the age of 92.

He was born in Seoul, South Korea on March 31, 1931 and graduated as the top student of Kyung Gi High School. His college education was interrupted by the Korean War when he had to evacuate Seoul and escape to the south to Busan, South Korea. In 1953, he was able to return to Seoul to resume his studies at Seoul National University where he then graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering with highest honors in 1955.

In 1957, Chung Sun Suh was awarded a Rotary International Scholarship for graduate studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology and moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America where he would eventually become a naturalized citizen and spend the rest of his life. In November 1958 in Atlanta, Georgia, he married his sweetheart from Korea, Unsook Kim. He then graduated with a Masters Degree in Textile Engineering in 1960 from Georgia Tech. Upon graduation, he accepted a position as a Textile Chemical Engineer with Burlington Industries, the world's largest textile company at that time, where he was employed for 28 years.

Chung Sun and Unsook moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where Burlington Industries was headquartered and birthed and raised two sons there. The family was the first South Korean family to live in North Carolina and their sons, Paul born in 1959 and Kendall born in 1960 were the first Koreans born in North Carolina.

Chung Sun Suh was awarded a Ph.D in Engineering after studying with California Coast University in 1992. After leaving Burlington Industries he served as a Textile Engineering consultant to various domestic textile companies. He also served as a Textile Engineering consultant in Guatemala and made presentations at International Textile Seminars in Mexico, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, in addition to the U.S. He then served three years as Executive Vice President of Ace Textiles of Sumter, South Carolina. He served as President of his consulting firm, Suh & Associates for several years prior to his retirement.

He and his wife lived in Shallotte, North Carolina after his retirement and then eventually moved to the Raleigh area to live near their sons.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Unsook Kim Suh, his sons Dr. Paul Boksuk Suh (Kay) and Dr. Kendall Hyunsuk Suh (Eunjin), his granddaughters, Sara Suh Petty (David), Hannah Suh Kittinger (William), Rachel Jeehee Suh, and his great grandsons William Townes Kittinger II and Wyatt Charles Kittinger as well as nieces and nephews in South Korea.

He will be cremated and ashes buried at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest after a private memorial service using the services of Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home.
