David Berrier Obituary

David Lee Berrier

April 25, 1953 - September 23, 2025

After a short illness, David Lee Berrier died on September 23, 2025, at the age of 72. David was born on April 25, 1953, to the Reverend Dr. Floyd Berrier and Ann Portis Berrier and grew up in Midway, NC. A lifelong resident of the Tar Heel State (with the exception of his memorable junior high years in Calvert County, MD), he graduated from Northwest Guilford High School in 1971 as president of his class and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Radio, TV, and Motion Pictures in 1975. He worked several jobs after college, including with Eastern Airlines, and volunteered with the Oak Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and Oak Ridge Horse Show before embarking on a 30-year career leading the circulation department at the Greensboro News & Record.

For many years, David enjoyed an annual men's golf trip and trips to Cape Lookout with his cousins for surf-fishing. He had an intense love of sports, particularly the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the Atlanta Braves, which he passed down to his children through many hours of watching, discussing, and attending games together. He played baseball starting in childhood, including for UNC and a semi-professional team in Charlotte, and spent the last 10 years working with the Greensboro Grasshoppers. He appreciated a good glass of bourbon or wine, and in retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Cammie, to tour U.S. capitals and to explore wine regions and art museums both domestically and abroad.

David made friends wherever he went and believed strongly that we should all take care of each other. He and Cammie joined Muir's Chapel United Methodist Church in 1983, where he held many leadership positions and sang bass in the choir. He also volunteered with several community organizations, including A Simple Gesture and the Greensboro History Museum.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cammie McGinnis Berrier; his daughter, Lucy Ann Berrier Matheson; and son-in-law, Ryan Matheson; his son, Jacob Everett Berrier; his mother, Ann Portis Berrier; his brothers, Bruce and Danny Berrier; his dog, Indigo; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 28th, at 4 p.m. at Muir's Chapel UMC, 314 Muirs Chapel Road, Greensboro.

The family asks that memorial gifts be made to A Simple Gesture in Greensboro, NC, asimplegesture.org or the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center,unclineberger.org to support cancer research.
