Finn Grubbe Obituary

Finn Grubbe

March 21, 1944 - August 28, 2025

Finn Grubbe, also known as Saint Finn the Pius, Grouchy, Morfar, and Mr. G, aged 81, died peacefully at his home in Greensboro, NC, on August 28, 2025, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Finn was born to Ejler and Emmy Grubbe in Vallo, Denmark, on March 21, 1944. He married Mary Donnelly in 1969. Finn is survived by his brother, Leif; his four daughters, Marianne (Donald), Lise (Ryan), Karin (Justin) and Gina (Garey); 13 grandchildren, Benedict (Catie), Jude (Savanna), Francis, Maria (Shane), Sophia (Rob), Brigitta (Kevin), Christian, Mary, Daniel, Kianna, Jordan, Dylan and Griffin; and nine great-grandchildren, Izzy, Penelope, Lilly, Luna, Liam, Eliza, Eve, Joseph and unborn baby Anthony.

Finn left Denmark at age 21 to work in the wood business, which took him all over the world. He loved to travel and lived in Durban, Houston, Kuala Lumpur, Beirut, and London before settling in Greensboro, where he has lived happily for 39 years.

Finn was a truly special one-of-a-kind man. He was a loyal, loving, and generous leader to his family. He had a smart perspective, making the most of every opportunity, and brought his sense of humor to the small moments. He made everyone feel welcome and provided a home and sense of belonging to so many people lucky enough to be a part of his life. He was honest, loving, funny, and loyal, and he will be remembered, revered, and loved for many years to come. He was a true character, and the world will be poorer without him.

Please join us for a memorial for our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Finn, on Monday, September 1st, beginning at 11:57 a.m., ending at 2:33 p.m. at his home in Greensboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Horizon Residential Care Center at horizonscenter.org/donate/

He was the best neighbor we ever had, He welcomed us to his home and introduced us to others in the neighborhood. He was funny, warm and sincere and always had a kind word to say. We will miss him.

Finn and Mary welcomed me into their home many years ago as a school friend of their eldest daughter, Marianne.

40 years or so may have passed but my memories of that time are both treasured and undimmed.

Such special times to be part of the Grubbe family - Frikadella, mushrooms, paper rounds, milk floats, joining you all on an family holiday to South Africa and so much more (if you know you know!!).

Finn was a very special man and I have no doubt he will remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

Love to you all as you grieve his passing. He will be much missed.

Dear Finn the best and truest of friends for almost 50 years. Loved by all my family. SO many memories of St Finn the Pius!! After losing Mary, his wonderful wife, he was a fantastic father to his four beautiful daughters, his youngest being only 10. My late husband and I spent many happy times with all the family and kept in touch over the years when they all left the UK for Greensboro. Finn was wonderful keeping in touch. He would WhatsApp every week to see how things were with everyone here and I would get news of him and the girls. I would WhatsApp too but he usually beat me to it!!! The dearest and kindest of friends always ready to help especially when family were visiting the States and Willoughby Road was a very welcoming home. Finn you will be SO missed, not only by your daughters and their families but by your
extended family in various parts of the world and your numerous friends, also worldwide. Well St Finn I hope you are fast tracked to heaven, and please put in a good word for all your family and friends!! Rest in Peace dearest Finn and thank you for your love and wonderful friendship.

I´m saddened to hear of Finn´s passing. Growing up in the `80´s in Greensboro NC, I have nothing but fond memories of Finn. Especially when he would educate me with the rules of "dirty soccer" as we played in his yard. I was blessed to have Finn, Mary, Marianne, Lise, Karin and Gina as close family friends at that time in my life. And while time has passed and miles have separated us, they´re all still considered family.
My heart felt condolences to everyone during this difficult time. Love and light to all, and sending warm hugs across the many miles.

Love,
Patrick & Family
