Our touchstone passed away on the night of January 25, 2024.

George Armor Holder, Jr. was the first son and third of five children born to Loraine and George Armor Holder, Sr. on December 8, 1957. Father to four children. Loving grandpa to Nicholas and Benjamin Feder. Uncle to many. Brother. Peacemaker. Friend.

George, or simply "G" to family and childhood friends, never asked much of anyone. He was quietly optimistic, even under the most challenging circumstances-and challenged he was. He was not prone to malice or self-pity. Gentle, wise, and soft-spoken, he had a way of making us feel that everything would be okay.

It's hard to imagine that this man, who could scarcely share a sentimental thought without shedding a tear, built a thirty-year career as an officer and detective with the Greensboro Police Department (GPD). He dedicated most of his career to investigating crimes against children. He was promoted to Captain for Patrol District 1, where he commanded law enforcement in downtown and northwest Greensboro and served as a GDP liaison to the City Council. Throughout his career, George was respected and admired for his non-demanding approach to leadership. People willingly followed his instructions because they liked and trusted him. He led with compassion, which served him in all his professional interactions, especially when protecting children from abuse and neglect.

For most of his 66 years, George was on his feet--working, running, hiking, camping, skiing, golfing, fishing, and quarterbacking backyard football games with family at Christmas and Thanksgiving. He even boxed a little to stave off the effects of Parkinson's disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2018. Though we will miss him terribly, we celebrate the fact that Parkinson's can no longer hold him back. He was not a sedentary man. He was, at his very soul, an adventurer and a servant. Those of us who knew his council hold fiercely to his soothing voice and unfailing kindness. To us, "G" was the real Andy Taylor. And he always will be. George is survived by his four children: George Holder III, Amanda Feder, Adam Holder (Alexandra), and Austin Holder (Zenia); two grandchildren, Nicholas Feder and Benjamin Feder; his brother, Mark Holder; and his sisters, Cathy Cook (Tom) and Trish Holder (Mark Raines). He is also lovingly remembered by a host of nieces and nephews. George is preceded in death by his older sister, Terry Johnson (Howard), his mother, Loraine Holder, and his father, George Holder. Our loss is their gain.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 812 Duke Street, Greensboro, NC. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 3 p.m. in the Lineberry Center at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC.
