Howard Spoon Obituary

Spoon, Sr., Howard Russell

September 9, 1937 - August 15, 2022

Mr. Howard Russell Spoon, Sr., 84, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022, at Beacon Place.

His funeral service will be held on at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at First Baptist Church of Summerfield with Dr. Kelly Bullard officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.

A native of Durham County, Howard was born on September 9, 1937, the son of the late John Manley "J. M." Spoon and Alma Shropshire Spoon Freeman. He was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church of Summerfield where he served as a deacon and trustee, taught the Young Couples and Agape Sunday School classes, and served on the Benevolent Committee. Following his retirement from Burlington Industries where he worked as a cost accounting manager, he went on to work for Carolina Transportation Sales and lastly as a driver in the UNC-G Transportation Department. He served proudly in the US Navy. In earlier years he thoroughly enjoyed playing golf. Time spent with family, however, was his treasure on earth, especially spoiling the grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul William Spoon, and sister, Carolyn Freeman Clapp.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Howard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carmen S. Spoon; children Suzanne Hedgecock and her husband, Ken, of Oak Ridge, Sharon Edwards of Statesville, Howard R. "Rusty" Spoon, Jr. of Harrisburg, and Randall Spoon and his wife, Tammie, of Greensboro; 3 grandchildren Ethan Hedgecock, Megan Hedgecock, and Austin Lambert.

Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church of Summerfield, 2300 Scalesville Road, Summerfield, NC 27357.

Howard was one of the kindest and positive men that I know. I worked with him at UNCG and he would bring the bus drivers mountain apples in the Fall and Hardees sausage biscuits many times. I remember he took the time to assist me in contacting the person who took over for him after he retired from UNCG. It was his last day and he could have brushed me off but, he didn´t. That´s the kind of man he was. He will certainly be missed from this life. RIP,Howard.
