Jim grew up in New Wilmington, PA, and graduated from New Wilmington High School. He then earned a BS in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens, OH, and married Nancy Jane Cupp of Pandora, OH, on July 14, 1962.
He began his professional career as a general assignment news reporter and photographer for the Fairborn Ohio Daily Herald, before entering the United States Navy, where he served aboard the USS Hermitage (LSD-34) as a general line officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis and later served as an Assistant Public Information Officer for the Fourth Naval District, headquartered in Philadelphia, PA.
Following his service, Jim worked in Public Relations and Advertising at Ketchum, MacLeod and Grove, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA, and at Ohio University, where he began to develop a career focus on fundraising, philanthropy and development. After starting a family and a move to Columbus, OH, Jim led fundraising and capital campaigns for Goettler Associates, the Ohio Republican Finance Committee and the Ohio President Ford Committee (1976 Presidential campaign).
As Director of Development for the Columbus Museum of Art, Jim was instrumental in a large, transformational capital campaign that enabled major growth for the Museum and he earned the Practitioner of the Year Award from the Central Ohio PRSA. While in Columbus, Jim also worked with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Ohio State University Medical Center in fundraising capacities.
Jim and Nancy relocated to Greensboro, NC in 1990, where he founded Buchanan Printing and Graphics together with his son David. As President and later Chairman, he and David have built Buchanan Printing & Graphics into one of the leading commercial printing operations in the Triad region. Jim retired in 2019.
More important than his professional accomplishments, Jim was an incredible and loving husband, father and grandfather who took care of those he loved and always had time to help others and pass along thoughtful guidance. Jim enjoyed traveling to the seashore, where he collected sand from many of the beaches of the world, model ship building and Ohio State football. He also sought and collected finely crafted boxes made by artisan woodworkers throughout the country. Jim also enjoyed a cocktail with Nancy every evening at 5:00 p.m. and cherished the time spent with his family, especially his granddaughter, Grace.
Jim faced health difficulties late in life with a quiet resolve and his family would like to extend much gratitude to each of the healthcare professionals who provided care for him.
