James Daly Obituary

Daly, Jr., James "Jim"

May 29, 1941 - August 21, 2023

HIGH POINT-James Melvin Daly, Jr., 82, died peacefully on Monday, August 21, 2023, at Well Spring Retirement Community Health Care in Greensboro.

He was born May 29, 1941, in Portland, Maine, to the late James Melvin Daly and Bridget Griffin Daly. He grew up in Portland and graduated from Deering High School in 1959. He attended the University of Maine for one year and then entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1964.

Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1969, and his active duty service included Airborne and Ranger School. He served in the 25th Infantry Division in Honolulu, Hawaii, the central highlands of Vietnam near Pleiku, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Camp St. Barbara, Korea. While in Korea, he met Jane Meares of Atlanta, Georgia, an American Red Cross employee, whom he married on August 15, 1970, in Atlanta. They moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where Jim attended the Harvard Business School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, earning his MBA in 1973.

Jim's career included New England Telephone Company, Continental Can Company and Miller Brewing Company. In 1976, he began his career with Miller in Azusa, California, and relocated to Eden, North Carolina, in 1977. In 1995, he was transferred to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and retired from Miller Brewing Company in January 1999. He and Jane moved to Cornelius, North Carolina, for the next twenty-two years and relocated to High Point, North Carolina, in order to be near family.

While working and in retirement, Jim enjoyed numerous civic and business affiliations and often served in leadership positions. He was an active member of the Rotary Club in Eden and Cornelius, having received the Paul Harris Fellow Award. While in Eden, he served as a board member of the Chamber of Commerce, Morehead Memorial Hospital, Nations Bank, Rockingham Community College and the YMCA. In Cornelius, he was an active member of the West Point Society of the Carolinas and Southenders Men's Club. He was a volunteer transport driver for the American Red Corss and member of the Board of Directors of Seed Programs International and Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson, North Carolina. Wherever Jim lived he was always active in the Catholic Church, serving on the Pastoral Council in two locations.

Jim's business life was full but he always found time to support and be involved in his sons' activities in school, sports and church. In retirement, he enjoyed supporting the activities of his three grandchildren. Jim loved sports both participating in and watching numerous sporting events throughout his life.

Jim is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Jane Meares Daly; sons, Sean Christopher Daly (Melissa) of High Point and Scott Alan Daly (Michelle) of Brown Summit; three grandchildren, Aidan and Liam Daly of High Point and Fiona Daly of Brown Summit; sister, Patricia Daly of Higgins Beach, Maine; two brothers, Dennis Daly (Nancy) of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and Brian Daly (Laurel) of Portland, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church (4145 Johnson Street, High Point, NC). The family will visit with friends and family following the service.

I would graciously like to express my sorrow for the Daly' family loss. I knew Mrs. Jane Daly through her visits coming to Well Spring to see her husband, Mr. Jim Daly. I worked at the front gate as a Resident Security agent. I know that with this loss, I may not see Mrs. Daly again, but this does not mean that she will never be in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless the Daly family in this time of sorrow.

I count myself lucky to have known Jim in the Southenders for a number of years. We both enjoyed Davidson Basketball and Jim taught me much about the game. I shall miss him dearly.
