GREENSBORO JOSEPH ANTHONY SCUTTI OF GREENSBORO, NC passed away on May 8, 2015 at Beacon Place after a brief illness. Joe, born in 1932, was a Philadelphia native who resided in Greensboro for the past 43 years. He was the son of Camillo and Ottavia Scutti. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carmela and their four children Joanne Wheelus and husband, Darrell of Greensboro, NC; Theresa Byrd and husband, Tim of Greensboro, NC; Robert Scutti of Hattiesburg, MS; Diane Scutti and husband Ed Seiz of Erdenheim, PA; grandchildren Charles Scutti and Christopher Byrd; brothers James and John Scutti; sister-in-law Jenny Mattiucci; brother-in-law Joseph Caromano and wife Louise, and several nieces and nephews. Joe graduated from St. James High School in Chester, PA. After high school he played semi-pro football for Lloyd Athletic Club and then served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Thuben during the Korean War. Upon returning from the War, he joined in his father's business and worked as a barber prior to enrolling in St. Joseph's college in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from St. Joseph's in 1957 with a BS degree in Business Administration. After college he worked for Westinghouse and Pennsylvania Department of Revenue before beginning his career with the Internal Revenue Service in Philadelphia, PA. He was transferred to Greensboro, NC in 1972 and retired from the IRS after 30 years. A few years after retiring Joe founded ProMessenger of the Carolinas where he worked until his recent illness. Long known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and dry sense of humor, Joe always managed to balance his family life and professional life with service to the community and helping others. Some of the organizations he was actively involved with included the Knights of Columbus Piedmont Council 939 in which he served in several leadership positions including Grand Knight and State District Deputy; the Greensboro chapter of SCORE offering professional business advice to entrepreneurs and business owners; Birthright of Greensboro; St. Vincent De Paul Society of Greensboro; and little league coaching of baseball, football, and basketball teams. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.Joe's personal interests were as varied as his working career. He participated in a bowling league, loved to golf, was an excellent dancer of jitterbug and swing dances, enjoyed watching sports and old movies, and playing cards with friends. He was a member of the Greensboro Italian American club and was enthusiastic about traveling, especially the trips to Italy where he visited his many family members in Altino.A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 2205 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403. The service will be preceded by a visitation at the church starting at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following the funeral mass a luncheon to celebrate Joe's life will be held at the Knights of Columbus Clubhouse, 2780 Horse Pen Creek Rd, Greensboro, 27410. Everyone is invited. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lamb Foundation of NC, Inc., 6420-A1 Rea Road, Suite 312, Charlotte, NC 28277 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
