Lawrence Edward (Larry) Pike, Jr., died September 28, 2025. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Greensboro. The family will visit with friends in the atrium following the service.
Larry was born in High Shoals, Oconee County, Ga., on August 3, 1931. He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 64 years. He served as an eighth grade Sunday School teacher and director of the eighth grade department for 13 years. He was an adult Sunday School teacher, a deacon, and chaired the Library Committee. He served 10 years in the Georgia and South Carolina National Guard, enlisting as a private and attaining the rank of captain.
His life insurance career spanned more than 50 years, as an agent in Greenville, S.C.; vice president of Pilot Life Insurance Company in Greensboro; and as general agent of his own brokerage agency in Greensboro. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter and taught CLU classes for 20 years.
Larry earned his ham radio license at age 74, and achieved "extra" class designation at age 79. His call sign was AK4JB. He worked with Cub Scouts as committee chairman and was a member of O. Henry Civitan Club. He was president of the Greensboro chapter of the American Cancer Society for two years. He had many interests, including photography and genealogy. He was always learning; the family often looked to him for advice. He was a very positive person with a great sense of humor. Besides being a salesperson and leader, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence Edward Pike, Sr., and Marie Daisy Poulnott Pike; a daughter, Miriam Dawn Pike; grandson, Michael Preston Wood; his sister, Martha Pike Wilder Hamlin; and brothers, George Willard Pike, Wayman Reese Pike, and Walter Donald Pike. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Geraldine (Gerry) Scott Pike; and their children, son, Lawrence Edward Pike III (Carol), Glasgow, Ky., and daughter, Alisa Bryn Pike Chapman, Yanceyville, N.C.; grandsons, Daniel Griffin Pike (Amy), Glasgow, Ky., and David Scott Pike, Arcata, Calif.; and great-granddaughters, Anne Rhoades Pike and Emaline Robert Pike, Glasgow, Ky.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
