Linda Coggins Obituary

Linda Coggins

July 15, 1950 - January 9, 2025

Mrs. Linda Coggins of High Point, NC, died January 9th. She was 74. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Jennifer, and her daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Joel. Her beloved grandchildren, Lilly, Sam, and Sylvie. Her sisters, Joy and Sherry; brother Glenn; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Born in Cincinnati, Linda and her family moved around a lot. It was in Greensboro, NC, in high school, when she met the love of her life, James Coggins. They attended Appalachian State, got married, and after graduation, her Art teaching career began in Scotland County. They later moved to Guilford County, where she taught at Southern Guilford High before joining her husband on the faculty at Southwest Guilford High School until she retired in 2011. Linda and Jim filled their retirement with travel and doting on their grandchildren. After more than 50 years of marriage, Jim passed away in July 2023.

In the classroom, Mrs. Coggins inspired her students to find their creative voice. Using patience and positivity, she guided her students in a variety of media, including paints, pencil, chalk, print making, clay and digital media. She started Art On Wheels, a summer program for under-served youth. She worked hard to become the first board-certified art teacher in Guilford County. Her students were recognized with countless national, state, and local awards at art shows. She led yearly fieldtrips, sharing her love of art museums and their exhibits.

In this time of grief, the family has been amazed by the outpouring of kind words and stories of how Mrs. Coggins affected so many of her former students. To honor her, the family asks each of you to Make Art! Pick up the pencil, pen, or brush you haven't touched in a while and get Creative! Be the positive influence Mrs. Coggins was for you. Find a way to pay it forward.

Visitation is Wednesday, January 15th, from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. service at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Services, Kernersville Chapel, 213 W. Mountain St., Kernersville, NC. Interment is at 2 p.m., at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 O'Henry Blvd., Greensboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mrs. Coggins' name to the Visual Arts Department at Southwest Guilford High School, 4364 Barrow Rd., High Point, NC 27265.

I enjoyed working with Linda at Southern Guilford High School. Her bubbly personality made her a joy to be around. She was truly a talented artist.
