Former NC State Representative Margaret "Maggie" Jeffus-Gotare, 90, died Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Burlington. She was a former resident of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 15, 2025, at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Burial will be private.

Maggie was born on October 22, 1934, in Roanoke, Virginia, to the late Clarence Herbert and Alyne Bowles Moore. She was a member of Starmount Presbyterian Church and a former member of the choir. While she dedicated her life to education (she received numerous local, state, and national awards, including National Teacher of the Year), she also enjoyed cruising and had a love for music. Preceding her in death are husbands, Charles Oliver Jeffus, Theadore "Ted" Thompson, and David Bryce Goltare; and a daughter, Holly Ann Jeffus-Thomas.

She is survived by son, Edward Dane Jeffus of Thomasville, NC; son-in-law, Gregory F. Thomas of Whittsett; grandchildren, Amanda F. Thomas, Samantha N. Thomas, Lisa E. Smith, Jessica L. Maggie was a constant source of help and information while I served on the Greensboro City Board of Education 1980-93. I was so grateful to support her as she moved on to service for all children from the NC Legislature. What a gift that was to all in NC.

Maggie was an incredible woman. She represented us so well in Raleigh, always a strong advocate for private property rights and education.
She was also a great neighbor. Our home suffered severe damage during a storm and she was the first one there when it passed to check and make sure we were ok.
I always enjoyed conversations and any chance meeting. My life is richer because she was in it. I am sorry that I wont be able to attend her service but will keep her at heart.

I spent many, many hours in delightful conversations about politics with Maggie. She was always concerned with doing the right thing to help and support the people of North Carolina.

I remember Mrs. Jeffus when I was in one of her classes back in the 1970s. She was a calm, patient and excellent educator. She always had time for her students. When she became involved in politics, I reconnected with her and she remembered me and was always so thankful for the reconnection and always answered her emails, phone calls, etc. She was a super sweet lady. Prayers for her family, friends, and my former classmates that knew her.
