MARY POPE JOHNSON STOKESDALE Mrs. Mary Pope Johnson, 77, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Moses Cone Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, at Stokesdale United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ashley Thomas officiating. A Guilford County native, Mary was born on March 21, 1936, the daughter of the late Henry Albert and Bernice Apple Pope. She attended High Point University, graduating in 1960, followed by a teaching career with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools. Over her career she taught at Prince Ibraham and Walkertown Elementary Schools as well as Mineral Springs Middle School, and retired in 1987. She has also been an active, long-time member of Stokesdale United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher for the St. Andrew Class and being involved in the women's activities. On June 29, 1957, she married Jack Johnson. Surviving are her husband of fifty-six years, Jack B. Johnson of the home, daughter Elaine Christopher and her husband, Bruce, and their children Benjamin and Sarah Christopher, of Stokesdale; a sister Martha Washburn of Madison, and a brother-in-law Bill Johnson of Ocala, Florida. She was preceded in death by two sisters Orlanda Friddle and Bennie McGee. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be directed to Stokesdale United Methodist Church, for either the Agape Missionary Project or the General Fund, PO Box 38, Stokesdale, NC 27357.
