Mary Montgomery Obituary

Mary Elizabeth "Mary Beth" Courts Montgomery

January 28, 1958 - May 12, 2025

Mary Elizabeth Courts Montgomery (Mary Beth) passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025. She was surrounded by family at home.

An avid UNC fan, Mary Beth earned a BS in Home Economics from UNC-Greensboro in 1980 and then a Master of Education degree in Foods and Nutrition in 1982. Most of Mary Beth's career was spent as a Registered Dietician and serving older adults with the State of North Carolina and Neill Medical Group. She was on WRAL TV Channel 5 on August 26, 1994, showing how to make a low-fat healthy banana pudding.

She lost her husband on August 7, 2013, to suicide. This tragic event led her to become a published author, which impacted many people's lives by sharing her faith journey as a suicide survivor widow. It was a constant struggle throughout her life dealing with the pain, loss, and grief trying to understand why he chose that path. It greatly impacted her health over the years. She was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2022.

She was devoted to her church and church family. Most recently she enjoyed feeding her donkeys, playing the piano, bible study, singing in the choir, and going out to eat with friends. She never met a stranger and would say hello and smile. She loved spending time with family and friends. Her favorite outings were going to the beach and mountains.

Mary Beth is survived by her sister, Kathy Courts; the niece caregiver, Erin Haines; nephew, Ben Courts (Juvy); great-nephews, Blake and Grey Courts; sisters-in-law, Suzanne Bingham and Cam Brooks and their families; beloved caregiver, Wendy Dunn; long-time friend, Teresa Johnson Troup; adopted friend parents, Don and Marion "Sis" Stevens; and donkeys, Max and Beulah Mae. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Ellyn Courts; husband, Robert Montgomery; dog children, Pepper, Oreo, and Cinnamon.

For a special tribute in lieu of flowers, please consider purchasing Mary Beth's book available on Amazon, God is Enough, and passing it along to suicide survivor families.

There will be a memorial service at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Staley at 3 p.m. on June 21, 2025.

Marybeth was a special person. She and Pastor Bob were a beautiful couple and he baptized our oldest sons. I loved the prayer closet she made after Bob died and all the thoughts and prayers and obviously time she spent with God. She was passionate about her love for her Lord and Savior. I read her book and I am sure it has helped many people as they deal with a loss from suicide. Marybeth I know beyond a doubt you are whole in the arms of Jesus and all the suffering is gone and Bob is whole with you. Much love sweet friend

We have missed taking her to church. She enjoyed singing in the choir until her sickness prevented her from participating. She always had a smile and a hay for everyone. She loved going for rides and stopping to get something to eat. She also loved going to the church dinners and taking desert home. Missing the little kisses on the cheek in church after singing a hymn. The care that she received was full of Love. Don and I were very Blessed to be a part of her last three years. She is heaven bound, and all we can do is hope for the same. Love you Mary Beth.
