GREENSBORO Matthew Steele Holcombe, 44, died unexpectedly Monday, April 17, 2017 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 at Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, at the funeral home. Matthew was born January 26, 1973 in Greensboro, NC to Thomas Steele Holcombe of Calabash, NC and the late Maria Mentavlos Holcombe. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University and received his MBA from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He worked as a systems consultant for Unifi, Inc. in Greensboro for 20 years. He attended Westover Church and had many various hobbies and interests. He loved golf, world travels, trips to the beach and most recently running half marathons. He was a huge Appalachian State football and Carolina basketball fan. In addition to his father, he is survived by his brother, Chris Holcombe of Greensboro, girlfriend, Debra Whiteheart of Durham, and goddaughter, Anna Marie Mentavlos. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, George Mentavlos and Jean Mentavlos, his paternal grandparents, Sam F. Holcombe, Jr. and Julia Bates Steele. Matt was a loving, caring son, brother and godfather. He had many close and dear friends during his life time. He was devoted to his dog, Buster. His memory will live on by all the lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4701 Hedgemore Drive, Suite 810, Charlotte, NC 28209.
