Richard Ephgrave Obituary

Ephgrave, Richard

November 20, 1943 - October 10, 2023

Richard George Ephgrave, 79, of Griffin, Georgia passed away on October 10th after a brief illness. Richard, fondly known as "Dick", was born to Thomas and Dorothy Ephgrave on November 20, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. Between receiving his Bachelor of Science from Northern Illinois University and his Master of Business Administration from Dartmouth College, Dick proudly served as a tank commander in the United States Army. After marrying the former Linda Curtis in 1970, he raised two sons, Rich and Rhett. He spent most of his professional career in corporate finance and as a resource for entrepreneurs planning to open small businesses. Always active in the communities in which he lived, Dick was a troop leader in the Boy Scouts of America, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, a liaison between the business community and the public school system of Guilford County, North Carolina, and President of the Service Corps of Retired Executives in Martinsville, Virginia. He also served as chairman or co-chair of the finance committees that massively renovated St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Greensboro, North Carolina and built an entirely new St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsville, Virginia. An enthusiastic cultivator and collector of considered opinions, he also was a frequent contributor to the Letters section of this very newspaper. He is survived by his wife Linda, his son Rhett and daughter-in-law Jamie, and his grandson George. He is also survived by his brother Tom and sister-in-law Julie, several nieces and nephews, and his son-in-law Darron.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, October 21st at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Griffin, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Oh boy, Dick and I were college roommates at Northern Ill Univ. We entered as 3rd year students, both in the business school. Lots of commonality, and choice of maybe three bars to hit on Friday nights. Dick was exceptional with language and writing, and he could also talk your head off. To family and friends of R.G.E., he was the best. Bill Ferensen

As I learned of the passing of Dick, I was truly saddened. Dick was such an amazing person and role model to all that knew him. He was someone that I always loved and looked up to. Mr. Ephgrave was a big part of my core memories in my teens and early 20s. His son Rhett was one of my best friends, and in high school his parents were always very welcoming to kids coming over to their house to hang out. Mr. Ephgrave would always open the door with a smile and make you feel right at home. He was always there to provide solid guidance or offer a witty joke at just the right moment. He was so funny in his own way, charismatic, and had such a kind heart. I loved him dearly and although I hadn’t seen them in ages, he was a friend from my hometown that will always hold a special place in my heart - the same way that I feel about his family.
There really are not enough words to describe my true compassion and sympathy towards the entire Ephgrave family during this very difficult time. I will hold you your family close in my prayers and I pray that God will bring peace and understanding to your hearts. Mr. Ephgrave was truly loved, made a true difference in this world and I am a better person for having known Dick Ephgrave. Our prayers are with you all.

I first met Dick when he was treasurer of Bassett Country Club and I was a Commercial lender at Piedmont Trust Bank.
He was a very pleasant , knowledgeable and professional guy and whose honesty truly impressed me.
Over the years we worked together at SCORE helping entrepreneurs to start their businesses and I was fortunate to sit on our church finance council with him. He and I embarrassed ourselves at golf , but had loads of fun and laughter.
I know these are tough days for you, Linda, but I know Dick is telling his humorous stories to St Peter.

Dick was such a kind man. He was my Virginia neighbor for a number of years. He and his dogs whether it was Brown Dog or Charlie were always friendly and polite to me as well as my own dogs. Dick always had a pleasant greeting every time you met him. I missed him after he moved to Georgia, but now I will miss him forever.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Linda, Rhett, and the rest of the family.

Being a neighbor and close friend of Dick and Linda I am very sad to learn of his passing. Dick was always there for me and my family. He was the King of Breezewood Road. When we moved in 2006 he and Linda were so welcoming and kind. I have missed them tremendously since they moved to Georgia. I want to send love and prayers to Linda and Rhett and his remaining family!! God bless!!

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Dick at McKee-Stone Funeral Home for several years and I doubt I have ever met a more friendly, easy going and down to earth person. He always had a smile on his face and was fun to be around. He was a very well respected person in our community who did a lot to help other people. I wish Linda and his family the very best in getting through this difficult time in their lives.

We are sorry to learn of our friend Dick´s death. He always had a ready smile and funky wit, and he could disagree with you but in a most pleasant way. We spent many a holiday weekend at the beach with Dick, Linda, Rich, and Rhett. Those memories will lift our spirits, even though we suffer a heavy heart. Rest in peace dear friend.
