Robert Kahrs Obituary

Born in New Rochelle, NY on November 10, 1939, Robert shared his birthday with the United States Marine Corps, a fact he took pride in throughout his life. Robert and his beloved wife of 63 years, Carol, raised their family in New Rochelle, and then Greensboro, NC after relocating for work in 1973. While in Greensboro, Robert and Carol opened their hearts and home to 40 infants prior to adoption over a span of 8 years.

Robert graduated from Lehigh University and went on to build a distinguished career as an agricultural chemist with Geigy, later becoming a director with Ciba-Geigy. His work took him across the United States, as well as Europe and South America, experiences he valued and reflected on over the years.

Upon retirement, Robert embraced a love of travel, especially cruises, where he enjoyed exploring new places at a relaxed pace. Retirement also allowed him more time to enjoy golf, where he found great camaraderie in his weekly retiree group and was especially proud of achieving his first hole-in-one at the age of 76.

Robert had a lifelong interest in cinema and spent many hours watching westerns, classic films and action movies. He was also an avid collector of custom-made knives, taking a particular interest in craftsmanship and the individuality of each piece.

He is survived by his wife Carol; his children, Ronald (Sherre), Deidre (E.C.), and Matthew (Lindsay); and his five grandsons, William, Walter, Ryan, Matthew Jr., and Jonathan.

Robert was a proud American who followed current events and history with great interest. He looked forward to this nation's upcoming 250th anniversary and took pride in being part of that history. He will be remembered for his values, his commitment to family and country, and the meaningful, generous life he lived.

It has been my privilege to know Bob Kahrs since high school in Eastchester New York. We reacquainted on the golf course with the Ciba Geigy retirees more than 60 years later. Bob played golf with dignity and grace, and was a valued friend. So sorry Carol.

Bob was one of the two people I dined with the night before my interview for employment with Ciba-Geigy. I am certain he had an influence on the decision to hire me. I soon joined the Residue Chemistry Group wherein Bob was manager. I discovered that Bob was a storehouse of knowledge as well as a fair and honest man. My life and career were enriched because of his mentoring and guidance. Condolences to the family.

Bob Kahrs was one of the most hardworking person I have ever known. He always had time to discuss issues at work and was a kind hearted individual. I admired his work ethic and his heart. I hadn't seen him in years but will always remember his contributions to our company to his colleagues when ever they needed it.

Carol and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Bob and I were colleagues for many years. He was a great person. He is the one that finally got me to play golf in the Ciba group. I told him I was terrible and he said it is not about the score it is about Playing and keeping in touch with our colleagues and friends. I will keep you and your family in our prayers

Though I did not really know your father, I got to know his son who is dedicated to his parents and made sure they had the best of life. The advice I can only give you is what my mother told me before she passed away and remember him with laughter, instead of tears, prayers are with you

I have such fond memories of you, Kahrs Family, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection! Of Bob in the choir, his love of LBW Hymn 23 "Lord Whose Love in Humble Service", and I still hang a sweet cross-stitched (by Deidre) ornament on my tree each year! Peace and love to all of you.

I have known, respected and loved Bob my whole life. There aren't many you can say that about. My family and the Kahrs family grew up together. Many memories will never be forgotten.
