Robert Starr Obituary

Starr, Robert

April 29, 1935 - June 2, 2023

Robert "Bob" Starr, 88, of Greensboro, passed away on Friday, June 2nd, after a life fully lived. The son of Charles Starr and Moss Gilliam, he is survived by his wife Barbara "Bobbie" Stubblefield Starr; six children: David (Michaelle), John (Melanie), Cindy (Bob Komsa, deceased), Brett (Melissa, deceased), Hygie (Ben Owens), and Dixie (Steve Halberstadt); 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bob was a hard-working entrepreneur with a variety of successful ventures. In high school, he started a newspaper route, reliably delivering for 38 years. In college, he founded Piedmont Drag Strip, becoming an East Coast Drag Racing Hall of Fame member for his impact on the industry. In his 30s, he established Starr Ice and remained its owner/operator until his death. Over the years, he was also an auctioneer, real estate broker, and laundromat owner.

He was partners in business and in life with his wife of 69 years, working well together through the years. In one of his many notes to her, he wrote that like a Timex, their marriage took a licking and kept on ticking, and like the Energizer Bunny, he hoped it would keep going and going.

Those who met Bob know words cannot describe the unique character that he was. An untamed spirit with a fierce sense of independence, he chose to walk through life with bare feet on a path he blazed himself. He never knew a stranger and was never too shy to share his tall tales and playful antics.

Those who love him know he will find a way to dance to bluegrass music in heaven while still raising a little hell along the way.

Visitation will be held at George Brothers Funeral Service on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at 3 p.m. with a service following at 4 p.m. Arrangements by George Brothers Funeral Service. Online condolences may be left at www.georgebrothersfuneral.com.

It was wonderful getting to know the Starr family over the many years! Although I was the inspector of the ice manufacturing, Bob and Bobbie welcomed me into their beautiful home as I sat and watched them eat their country style breakfast! I looked forward to every inspection, as Bob´s personality was exuberant and playful! He would often dance and show me how high he could jump! He will be deeply missed! I will keep his fond memories alive!!! Jennifer

Bobbie, what a perfect description of your Bob! He was truly one of a kind. I am so sorry to miss the service but I'm still sick. Never been this sick for this long. Thinking of you and so want to be there. Please call me soon. Love you, my oldest friend
