Robert Stephens Obituary

Robert Harvey Stephens, Jr.

November 10, 1950 - September 27, 2025

Robert Harvey "Rob" Stephens, Jr., 74, of Lexington, North Carolina, passed away on September 27, 2025. Born November 10, 1950, in Wilmington, Delaware, Rob made Greensboro, North Carolina, his home for over five decades, where he became an integral part of the tennis community in the Triad and beyond. He attended Guilford College, where he was a member of the track team.

A lifelong tennis coach, Rob dedicated his career to teaching the game he loved, coaching players of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to many of Greensboro's top-ranked juniors and professional players. Over the years, he served as an assistant coach at High Point University and Elon University, and worked at several top resorts across the country, including Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa, Florida, and the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida.

Through tennis, he developed so many close friendships that became family, including the entire Wake Forest tennis community, coaches, players, and supporters, the Isner family and the Berger family of Greensboro, North Carolina, and countless others. Rob was a once-in-a-lifetime character who will be greatly missed but always remembered by those who knew and loved him. A celebration of Rob's life will be announced at a later date.

Yesterday

I spoke to Rob almost every day by phone. He always called back if he missed your phone call. If I wanted to escape the craziness of this world, Rob was the man. He was a wealth of knowledge and cared less about things money could by or pretentious people. He lived all sports and tennis was his passion. He also love the 1920´s and the 1930´s . He loved the era of the gangsters. I often told him he lived in the wrong era. He was an old soul living in the 21st Century. R.I.P. Rob. You will be missed by many!

Yesterday

Rob, (Bobby) and I have been best friends for countless years. He would call me almost every day and we talked about sports, our friends, or just nothing at all. His favorite phrase he always said was "was it one of these" which referred to whomever we were talking about being a friend. Once he had to do a tennis internet video and answer questions, but didn't know how to take a test online and even more, could not use a mouse, which was frequently a thing we would joke about. We travelled together selling insurance up and down the east coast back some 20 years ago selling small disability policies. I am going to miss my phone calls from Rob, some four or five times a day and almost always at dinner. He was one of my best and loyal friends and so many memories. Bobby, I know it is now "one of these" for you. Love you buddy and I am going to miss you more than anything. "Chandler"
