GREENSBORO Mrs. Ruby T. Nielsen, 93, passed away suddenly on October 20, 2016 at her home. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel, 5926 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27410. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. in the chapel.Ruby was born in Loyall, Kentucky to the late Park and Bertha Taylor. During World War II, while staying with her sister and working in the office at the Naval Yard in Norfolk, she met the love of her life, LeRoy C.Nielsen, who was assigned to the USS Natchez. They married and their son, Barry, was born in Norfolk. At the end of the war, they moved to LeRoy's hometown of Rochester, New York, where their daughter, Janis, was born. LeRoy worked for Eastman Kodak as a mechanical engineer until his retirement. In the late 1950s, they moved to Spencerport, a suburb of Rochester, where they lived for 35 years. They moved to Greensboro in 1993 where LeRoy died that September.Ruby was a member of Grace Untied Methodist Church. She had not been able to attend church for several years but she appreciated the cards and sweet treats they brought her. She was a member of Starmount Bridge Club and the now defunct Y Matron's Bridge Club. For many years, she worked at the voting polls. She was surrounded by wonderful neighbors.Ruby was a devoted wife, fabulous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved cooking, needlework, bridge and gardening. She and LeRoy traveled widely until his death.Ruby is survived by her son, Barry (Pat) of Punta Gorda, Florida and daughter Janis Sigmon of Pleasant Garden; grandsons Reed (Stacey) Nielsen and Ryan Nielsen, both of Florida, Matthew (Rachel) Sigmon of Raleigh, and great-grandchildren, Camaron Nielsen, Ben Nielsen, Sterling LeRoy Sigmon, and numerous nieces and nephews.Ruby was predeceased in death by her parents, three brothers (Roger, Dennis and Ralph), three sisters (Mildred, Martha and America) her son-in-law John Sigmon, and her grand-dog, Doc.Memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Post Office Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0143 or to the Salvation Army, 307 West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina 27407.Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel is serving the Nielsen family and online condolences may be offered at www.forbisanddick.com.
