WILMINGTON SANFORD DOXEY, JR., 89, OF WILMINGTON, NC, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.He was born on November 11, 1925, the son of the late Sanford Doxey, Sr. and Valerie Lockhart Sanders Doxey.Sanford graduated from New Hanover High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps. He married Byah Thomason in 1946 with whom he had five children and in 1988 he married Janet Clary. He was the founder of Doxey Furniture Corporation and had various other business interests as well. Sanford served on the Board of the Medical Foundation at UNC Chapel Hill from 1984-2007 and as chairman 1999-2003; was the Founding Chairman of the Board of Visitors of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Research Center until 2005. He loved sailing, fishing, commitment with civic organizations and social clubs and all kinds of people. He would always take advantage of any kind of adventure.Surviving is his wife Janet Clary Doxey of Wilmington, NC; three daughters, Byah McGee (Robert) of Winston-Salem, NC, Kent Rigsby (Jimmy) of Augusta, GA, and Margaret Ann Hall (Cam) of Greensboro, NC; two sons, Sanford Doxey, III (Anne) of Pinehurst, NC and Jim Doxey (Clay) of Wilmington, NC; two sisters, Carol Starnes of Spartanburg, SC and Tee Woodbury (Gene) of Wrightsville Beach, NC; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Sea Path Tower Reception Room.A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Little Chapel on The Boardwalk in Wrightsville Beach, NC.The family would like to offer a special note of thanks to the staffs at Liberty Commons, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, and NHRMC as well as sitters, family and friends for all their support and care.Memorials may be made to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, 450 West Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27599 or Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401 or the Wounded Warrior Project, www.support.woundedwarriorproject.orgCondolences may be sent to www.andrewsmortuary.com Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel.
