AUSTIN, TX SUSIE WINSTON BAIN DIED IN AUSTIN, TEXAS on Friday, February 3, 2017. She was born in Bay City, Texas on July 21, 1922. She became a member of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) at age 19. She received the Congressional Gold Metal for her service to her country on March 10, 2010. Although she was a hero to all her family and friends, she never though her flying career was that big of a deal. She was married to the former mayor, Carson Bain, for 33 years. They worked together at Bain Oil Company throughout the marriage. Susie moved to Austin, Texas in 1982 and started a landscaping business, Grannies Country Gardens. She started a dancing studio in the basement of her house in Austin. She is survived by her three children, Bobby Bain (Vicki) in Greensboro, NC, Betty Osborn (Bud) in Tacoma, Washington, and Debby McCray in Austin, TX. She has eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A family-only service was held in Austin, Texas on February 7, 2017, at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church. A celebration of life will be held on February 18, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, 2128 Barton Hills Drive, Austin, TX 78704.
